Egypt turns new page; citizens await results

Mohammed Morsi officially became the president of Egypt on Saturday, as a new era of government takes shape. NBC's Kate Snow reports.

By NBC's Charlene Gubash

CAIRO -- Egypt, lovingly called the ?Mother of the World? by its people, turned a new page in its fabled history Saturday.

It saw the first ever democratically elected civilian president take the oath of office, not once but twice.

After President Mohammed Morsi swore in officially before the General Assembly of the Constitutional? Court, he addressed the nation from Cairo University and swore his oath of office a second time before the currently dissolved parliament.? He then attended an official military ceremony celebrating his inauguration.

The nation watched and this is what its citizens had to say.

?The speech was beautiful but the most important thing to us is carrying it out,? said Sayed Mohamed, taxi driver. ?The most important thing we need is work. Security brings work, work brings money, money brings tourism. Morsi is trying to gather all the Muslims, all the Christians, all the institutions.? He came through the ballot box, we have to stand by him and have patience.?

Ever pragmatic, most Egyptians prefer action to words.

?It?s a new era for all Egyptians, bank employee, Mohamed Sayed, 42, a bank employee. ?The government?s character will appear in time, whether they are good or bad. We want them to be just. We want them to change the image of the old days that everybody had. When I hear the words (Morsi) says, will he carry them out? For how many thousands of years have people have been talking,? but what do they do??

The head of the military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantaw, left, presents the 'shield of the Armed Forces,' the Egyptian military's highest honor, to Egyptian President President Mohammed Morsi during a ceremony Saturday at a military base in Cairo.

Hiba al Bandari, a fashionably dressed middle-age Egyptian woman, found in Morsi?s populist message a sign of hope and change.

?Today is a great day in Egypt,? said Hiba al Bandari. ?Most Egyptians are happy about practicing democracy and I hope it will be much better in the future.? We are expecting much from this president.? He gave Egyptians and himself a chance of one hundred days to see what will happen.? He promised to work with all people and movements. This is the first time in Egypt. In the past, nobody has done this.? All the past rulers governed alone. But today he is talking to the people from those on the bottom to those on top. His speech was democratic.?

Others expressed deep concern about Morsi?s ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

As Morsi takes office, many fear the 'Islamization of Egyptian society'

Miyvin Sedqi, a 29-year-old software engineer, worried, ?I don?t feel they are ones who can represent all the different trends in Egypt, they don?t believe in democracy and are not open to different opinions.? I?m kind of skeptical of what they are going to do. I don?t want them to succeed, because they are mixing religion with politics, but I don?t want them to fail as well because it would be bad for the revolution.?

Mona al Tahawy, columnist, found no reason for jubilation in today?s transfer of power.

New York-area politicians condemn Egypt's new leader over bid to free terrorist

?

?I think today was a big charade. I don?t think it was a historical day at all. I think it was the culmination of weeks of negotiation between (the ruling military council) and the Muslim Brotherhood. I?ve seen no reason to celebrate whatsoever today.?

Al Tahawy says Morsi?s presidency is a speed bump on the road to fulfilling the goals of the revolution.

?He took an oath today to respect institutions that have curbed his power, so I don?t know what he can do without a constitution, without a parliament and without clear delineation of what his powers are.? Many of us are continuing as if the revolution is continuing and this is just an obstacle in the way.

Charlene Gubash is NBC News' producer in Cairo.

Newly elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi was sworn into power on Saturday, leaving many across the country to wonder what will be included in a new constitution. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Teachers and Administrators, Don't Be Scared of Technology: It Won't Replace the Classroom

Last year, our principal posed this question to our faculty: Can we be rendered obsolete by online learning?

The Khan Academy was receiving widespread attention for propagating the idea of an online learning experience for younger students. There was a general fear among school administrators and teachers in the K-12 education community that this could become an exclusively online learning system; that a computer could replace a teacher, and an online learning environment could replace a classroom.

Could an online learning system replace a classroom? Yes, it could. Will it? Most definitely not.

The skills that are valued in education today, as opposed to ten years ago, require students to be able to do something with raw information. Students, in order to compete in this highly dynamic world, should be able to collaborate with others in order to create, synthesize, interpret, and evaluate information. These skills are not taught by rote learning alone, but rather are learned through discovery, inquiry, and exploration. Many of these skills cannot be successfully taught through an application or website, but must be experienced in class and facilitated by a teacher.

The Internet has changed society s definition of a knowledgeable person. As recently as t he beginning of the 21st century, educated people were those who knew a great deal of information about one or many subjects. Now, many of us carry smartphones in our pockets. The actual worth of being full of information has, as a result of this accessibility, gone down a great deal. In this Age of Information, access to facts and data is no longer available only to the educated elite, but is available to anyone with an Internet connection. So, as a society, what is an educated person ? What value does that person have? What information really matters, and what has been reduced to the level of trivia?

This is where the classroom comes in. A classroom is not a virtual dictionary or lecture hall where students can receive isolated pieces of information, but rather a place where students can learn how to distill and discern the value of the information they find on the Internet, as well as analyze bias, evaluate content, and construct their own knowledge.

Students need to be able to work with other students to come to these new understandings. In the classroom, the collaborative process is preparing our students to contribute to our economy that is now based more on service and face-to-face interactions than the manufacture of goods (as was the case fifty years ago.) This is the case regardless of the socioeconomic level of the school and its ability to access technology. Because of this shift, in today s world we have to be literate in the collaborative process.

While online learning has become prevalent in college environments, for K-12 education, it is simply not sufficient. As John Dewey (2002) states, When the school introduces and trains each child of society into membership within such a little community?we shall have the deepest and best guaranty of a larger society which is worthy, lovely, and harmonious. (p.124) Online learning has created more opportunities for colleges to convey information to students, but the education of younger students requires much more than the conveyance of information. Instead this burden of education includes the preparation of the student for interaction in our larger society.

Just like many other online learning tools, this exclusively online classroom idea can have its place. When Wikipedia first became commonly used, there was concern that it would be an academically unreliable source, and many educators banned its use by students. There is value to Wikipedia: it is a helpful tool in research as a jumping-off point to obtain further information. Similarly, we would be imprudent in completely discounting the value of learning sites like Khan Academy. When students need to reinforce certain skills, these online learning tools can be very helpful. Proponents of Khan Academy laud it for its ability to ensure that each student is held accountable for their own learning, and that certain skill reinforcement is not overlooked in the efforts of keeping up with the pace of the class. If education was simply about skill reinforcement, then this model might actually be a substitute for the traditional classroom; we as teachers know that skills are simply one facet of a well-rounded education.

While technology cannot replace a classroom, teachers would be remiss if they did not take advantage of the multitude of ways in which technological advances can help them further improve their craft. Now, teachers do not have to spend as much time teaching their students facts to memorize, and can devote more precious class time to engaging with the material on a level that requires students to think critically. Technology is a vehicle that makes this possible.

Effective teachers have been guiding students toward reaching deep and meaningful understandings of content for generations; teachers and their contributions are an invaluable part of the education system. It would be just as misguided to assume that teachers can be replaced by technology as it would be to assume that in today s world, teaching can exist without technology. These ideas are not, and should not be, mutually exclusive. In the classroom, there must be a marriage of interaction, collaboration, and technology.

For example, our students used Skype to speak with a state assemblyman; though this face-to-face interaction occurred through a computer screen, students were able to have an educational experience that would not have been possible otherwise. The alternative, letter-writing, would not have as much of an impact on the students. While all interactions should not be conducted by means of technology, its purposeful supplemental use can revolutionize learning experiences without sacrificing that which we hold dear about education.

Teachers skills must improve along with technological advances. While every year, new technologies are touted as indispensable classroom tools, only some will be worthwhile for actual use in the classroom. We teach our students critical thinking and evaluative skills; we need to apply those discerning skills to the multitude of technological tools we have the option of implementing in our classrooms.

Just because an educational tool isn t perfect does not mean it should be disregarded. Just because an online classroom does not replace the role of a teacher doesn t mean that this learning tool has no educational merit. Though there are thousands of technological tools that help enhance instruction, it doesn t mean that teachers will be rendered obsolete.

Microsoft releases list of 180 Windows Phone 8 launch countries

We?ve heard Microsoft bandy around a figure of 180 countries getting Windows Phone 8 at launch for a week or so, but up until now we haven?t been able to see the list itself. Things are coming into focus today, as the company tells us exactly which 180 countries are getting Windows Phone 8 Marketplace and the company?s App Hub app submission portal when devices first hit stores. Perhaps more interesting than the list itself is the news that developers in every country with Windows Phone 8 Marketplace will be getting access to App Hub ? a massive increase over the 38 markets available for aspiring developers in Marketplace?s previous iteration. Check below to see if your country made the cut (click the image for a larger version).

Party of "perfect dictatorship" set for comeback in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Accused of every dirty trick in the book during its 71-year grip on power in the 20th century, Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party has bounced back and is on the verge of a dramatic victory in Sunday's presidential election.

The PRI has seized on the anemic economic growth and rampant drug violence plaguing Mexico under the ruling conservatives and is promising to restore order and make voters better off if it returns to office after a 12-year hiatus.

Most polls show the centrist PRI's candidate, Enrique Pena Nieto, with a comfortable double-digit lead, and the party also might secure the first working majority in Mexico's Congress in 15 years.

That could allow Pena Nieto, the former governor of Mexico's most populous state, to push through economic reforms that the PRI repeatedly had opposed in order to deny conservative President Felipe Calderon any major political victories.

A byword for corruption, vote-rigging and heavy-handed rule during much of its rule between 1929 and 2000, the PRI has tried to distance itself from its grubby past and recast itself as a modern democratic party under the handsome Pena Nieto.

"If Mexico is not like before, why would it be governed like before?" Pena Nieto said in one of his campaign ads. "Don't be confused. As president of Mexico, I will govern with the most solid and free democratic principles in the world."

But memories still linger of what Peruvian Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa called the "perfect dictatorship" - the PRI's shifting ideology, firm grip on political power and co-opting of both union bosses and captains of industry.

On the campaign trail, Pena Nieto has been vague on some key policy issues and on his potential cabinet team, leaving some to wonder whether he represents the PRI that modernized the economy and instituted democratic reforms in the 1990s or the PRI of old-time power brokers known as the "dinosaurs."

"I'm holding back judgment on whether this means a return to the old PRI days," said Stacy Steimel, managing director at PineBridge Investments who oversees Latin American equity funds worth more than $600 million.

"You have to give him credit for the way he's administered his campaign," she said. "It would appear he has more support from the technocratic side of the party than the dinosaurs, although it's a big political machine."

The conservative National Action Party, or PAN, pushed the PRI out of power in a 2000 election but its two presidents have struggled to get reforms passed and growth has been weak.

Calderon made his war against drug gangs a centerpiece of his presidency but it backfired with a surge in violence with more than 55,000 people killed in brutal turf wars. Polls show voters are most concerned about jobs and violence and the PRI has capitalized on the government's perceived failures.

RIVALS

The PAN's candidate, Josefina Vazquez Mota, is third in the polls despite warning that the PRI threatens Mexico's hard-fought democracy. "Pena Nieto represents authoritarianism, the abuse of power and the surrender to crime," she said at her closing rally on Wednesday night.

Still, the PAN could choose to work with Pena Nieto and help him get economic reforms passed in Congress if he wins.

Pena Nieto's closest challenger is leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is promising to create millions of jobs and cut poverty. He narrowly lost the 2006 election to Calderon, claimed fraud and launched months of protests but failed to have the result overturned.

Lopez Obrador accuses the PRI of preparing a fraud this time and might call new protests if Pena Nieto wins.

"It would be terrible for the PRI to regain the presidency," he told supporters at a recent rally. "They are going to want to buy people's liberty and dignity with money."

But Mexico's electoral authorities are seen as reliable and any street protests are unlikely to have much impact if Pena Nieto's margin of victory is as wide as polls suggest.

In power, the PRI governed partly through force, as with an infamous 1968 massacre of protesters, and largely through a patronage system that kept the rank and file loyal, filtering the rewards of corruption up the chain of command.

The party also nurtured a cadre of U.S.-educated technocrats who opened up Mexico's economy before other Latin American powers and brokered the North American Free Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada.

A wave of privatizations made billionaires out of capitalists such as Carlos Slim, now the world's richest man, and cemented an industrial base of de facto oligopolies.

Mexico's oil monopoly Pemex, however, remained firmly in state control.

Pena Nieto is now pledging to push fiscal and energy reforms that his party once blocked, as well as boost competition and revamp police forces to focus more on tackling violent crime rather than going head to head with drug cartels.

Mexican financial markets already are betting on a Pena Nieto win, so an unexpected finish that puts his mandate and economic reforms at risk could spook investors.

He has said he wants Pemex to emulate the success of Brazil's Petrobras and would consider listing Pemex shares on the stock market while keeping it under state control in order to transform the lumbering giant and boost output.

"That shows he is willing to break an old PRI taboo and it's the kind of thing that you need to do to get reforms going," said Timothy Kehoe, an economics professor at the University of Minnesota and an adviser to Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

But reforms will depend on Congress, and how much Pena Nieto will have to negotiate with the opposition if he wins.

"I'm betting there will be modest reforms with modest results," Kehoe added. "I'm hoping for more."

Defining Intimacy | Counselling Connection

?Intimacy demands the highest risk but yields the richest reward. Intimacy is the driving force which makes the painful grit of life worthwhile. Intimacy is the life-giving beam of light, whereby we discover each other from the inside out, never quite fully, never entirely, but enough to find an exquisite inner oasis that replenishes us on our life?s journey.? ~ Teresa Adams (as cited in Hanna, 1991)

Intimacy is a difficult concept to define as it is possible to have intimate interactions with many people including a partner, family member or friend. Different levels of intimacy may be experienced from person to person such as having intimate interactions between one?s mother compared to one?s partner. As well as this, intimacy may be difficult to define as it is often used interchangeably with having a sexual encounter or having a verbal disclosure with someone (Hanna, 1991).

The following describes some already developed definitions of intimate behaviours, intimate experiences and intimate relationships:

Conceptions emphasising intimate interactions: Intimate behaviour

  • Sullivan (1953, p. 246): ?clearly formulated adjustments of one?s behavior to the expressed needs of the other person?.
  • M. Patterson (1976, p.235): ?a product of eye contact, distance, smiling and other behaviors?.
  • Fruzetti & Jackson (1990, pp.126-127): ?an interaction that? is self revealing and/or relationship-focused in its content? one partner does or says something [that]? is readily discriminated? by the pattern, who responds in a positive, understanding and/or self-revealing way her or himself?.
  • Reis & Shaver (1988, p. 375): ?an interpersonal process that involves communication of personal feelings and information to another person who responds warmly and sympathetically. This response validates the first person?s experience?.

Conceptions emphasising intimate interactions: Intimate experience

  • Chelune, Robinson, & Krommor (1984, p. 13): ?a subjective appraisal, based upon interactive behaviors that leads to certain relational expectations?.
  • Sexton & Sexton (1982, p.2): ? closeness, love, caring, and affection?.
  • L?Abate & L?Abate (1979, p.178): ?the sharing of hurt and of fears of being hurt?.

Conceptions emphasising intimate relationships

  • Sternberg (1986, pp. 120-121): ?(a) a desire to promote the welfare of the loved one, (b) experienced happiness with loved one, (c) high regard for the loved one, (d) being able to count on the loved one in times of need, (e) mutual understanding with the loved one, (f) sharing of one?s self and one?s possessions with the loved one, (g) receipt of emotional support from the loved one, (h) giving of emotional support to the loved one, (i) intimate communication with the loved one, and (j) valuing the loved one in one?s life?.
  • Tolstedt & Stokes (1983, p.574): ?reflects feelings of closeness and emotional bonding including intensity of liking, moral support and ability to tolerate flaws in the significant other?.
  • S.Gilbert (1976, p.221): ?a deep form of acceptance of the other as well as a commitment to the relationship?.
  • Waring (1981, p.34): ?a composite of? affection? expressiveness? compatibility? cohesion? sexuality? conflict resolution? autonomy? and identify?.
  • Perlman & Fehr (1987, p.16): ?the closeness and interdependence of partners, the extent of self-disclosure, and the warmth of affection experienced [within the relationship]?.
Clinebell & Clinebell (1970, p.1): ?the degree of mutual need-satisfaction within the relationship?.

(Source: Prager, K.J. (1995). The Psychology of Intimacy. New York, NY: The Guilford Press)

For the purposes of this post, an intimate interaction may be defined as sharing something that is personal with someone else (Prager, 1995). There are different forms of intimacy. One form of intimacy is cognitive or intellectual intimacy where two people exchange thoughts, share ideas and enjoy similarities and differences between their opinions in an open, secure way. A second form of intimacy is experiential intimacy where people come together and are actively involved in an activity. This can range from doing things as a couple or in a group situation and does not always involve talking or sharing but may just include activities ? for example, completing volunteer work at a local hospital together.

A third form of intimacy is emotional intimacy where two people comfortably share their feelings with each other or when they empathise with the feelings of the other person, really trying to understand and being aware of the other person?s emotional side. A fourth form of intimacy is sexual intimacy. This is the stereotypical definition of intimacy that most people are familiar with. However, this form of intimacy includes a broad range of sensuous activity and is much more than just sexual intercourse. It is any form of sensual expression with each other.

Thus far, intimate interactions have been discussed in general terms ? however, a definition of the intimacy experienced in a relationship is required. At its basic level, intimacy in a relationship refers to the sharing of different forms of intimate interactions occur on a regular basis. Intimacy with another person can be seen as the:??

  • Unmasking of oneself in order to be vulnerable in a trusting, loving, secure relationship;?
  • Sense that there is a special, unique, and distinct bond joining two people together;?
  • Sense of closeness and proximity or oneness and unity;
  • Sharing of tenderness, caring, and affection;?
  • Sharing of secrets, hidden feelings, and private thoughts;
  • Free will offering and receiving of each other;
  • Sense of being in a non-punitive, non-abusive and non-manipulative environment;
  • Mutual respect, recognition, and approval of each other?s need to be a sexual being. In a relationship this shared sexuality ultimately results in loving sexual intercourse.

RIM: QWERTY BlackBerry 10 phone launches in 'close proximity' to its all-touch cousin

Thorsten Heins at BlackBerry World

RIM hasn't had much good news to offer along with its glum fiscal first quarter, but it has given a reason to mark early 2013 on the calendar if you're a BlackBerry fan. CEO Thorsten Heins revealed during the results call that the first QWERTY BlackBerry 10 phone will arrive in "close proximity" to its touchscreen-only counterpart. What that entails is still very much under wraps, although there were clues. Heins stressed that the early batch would focus on the "premium" space, while BlackBerry 7 would hold down the entry and mid-range markets until their BlackBerry 10 replacements were ready. The tidbits won't provide much comfort to someone who has to decide on a phone by the holidays, but they hint that the truly patient could be rewarded for their calm under pressure.

Queer Heroes NW: Lupita Mendez | PQ Monthly

By Erin Rook, PQ Monthly

Today, June 21,?Queer Heroes NW?honors Lupita Mendez, an advocate for LGBTQ survivors of domestic violence. The Queer Heroes NW project, which honors a new hero every day in June, is a collaboration between Q Center and the Gay and Lesbian Archives of the Pacific NW (GLAPN).

Check out what the committee has to say about Renee, Jay, and Marty:

Lupita Mendez helps LGBTQ victims of domestic violence, and teaches healthy relationship skills. Bradley Angle House, Portland?s oldest shelter for survivors of domestic abuse (founded by lesbians), is the only organization in Oregon offering services targeted to LGBTQ victims of domestic violence. Lupita runs the program with vigor, and, in addition to the support group, she started a healthy relationships program that is the only one of its kind in the state of Oregon.

Lupita regularly partners with local organizations like Pivot and SMYRC to provide education and outreach (such as her monthly drop in classes called ?Boyfriend Lessons,? which target male-identifying queer folks for healthy relationships skills).

She facilitates at least four trainings a month, on domestic violence awareness for queer groups, and teaches LGBTQ cultural competency for other domestic violence organizations. She is the point person for any LGBTQ-identifying person living in tri-county domestic violence shelters, and is sought out statewide for her expertise.

Lupita Mendez has brought domestic violence and healthy relationships in the queer community into the spotlight in Oregon, and continues to push for equal access to services for LGBTQ survivors statewide. Without her work, hundreds of queer survivors would be without culturally specific support, and the needs of non hetero-normative couples and individuals seeking models for healthy relationships would go unmet.

Lupita received the 2010 Mariposa Award from Portland Latino Gay Pride.

Every day in June, the Queer Heroes NW project will reveal another hero. We?ll be posting them daily?here. Information on each of the honorees is also?featured on the walls of the Aaron Hall Gallery at Q Center through the end of June.

Ancient North Africans got milk

Herders began dairying around 7,000 years ago

Web edition : 3:20 pm

Saharan animal herders living in what was a grassy part of North Africa?s Sahara Desert around 7,000 years ago had a taste for cattle milk, or perhaps milk products such as butter. Researchers have identified a chemical signature of dairy fats on the inside surfaces of pottery from that time.

Dairy products played a big part in the diets of these ancient Africans, even though they did not live in farming villages as the earliest European milk users did, reports a team led by biogeochemists Julie Dunne and Richard Evershed, both of the University of Bristol in England.

Dairying may have spread from the Middle East and nearby areas ? where farming emerged around 10,000 years ago ? to Africa and Europe within a couple thousand years, the scientists propose in the June 21 Nature.

Chemical evidence shows that cattle milked in the ancient Sahara ate plants from both cool, wet areas and hot, dry expanses. ?Animals were being moved around the landscape between different ecosystems containing different plants, possibly as a result of seasonal variations in available pastures,? Evershed says.

Researchers generally assume that North Africans domesticated cattle, sheep and goats before growing crops. Previously excavated bones of domesticated animals date to roughly 8,000 years ago in North Africa. Rock paintings in the region depict cattle herding and a few instances of milking, but no reliable dates exist for these artworks.

An early date for dairying in North Africa ?implies that one of the reasons local African peoples adopted cattle was for their milk products,? says anthropologist Diane Gifford-Gonzalez of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

A 2008 pottery study led by Evershed placed the origins of cattle milking in what?s now northwestern Turkey at about 9,000 years ago.

Farming, raising animals, dairying and making pottery all apparently spread across Europe at the same time, says anthropologist Kevin Gibbs of the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. In contrast, the new study shows that Saharan herders adopted cattle and dairying into a nomadic lifestyle after having made pottery for several thousand years.

Some African groups possess genetic mutations that enable milk drinking without nausea and other unpleasant reactions to lactose, a sugar found in milk. These mutations commonly appear in Europeans, whose farming ancestors used milk at least 6,000 years ago (SN: 2/1/03, p. 67).?

?We could be looking at multiple origins for dairying,? remarks bioarchaeologist Oliver Craig of the University of York, England.

Dunne and Evershed?s group identified different forms of carbon in small, ground-up samples taken from 81 pottery fragments previously found at a Libyan rock shelter and dating to between 7,200 and 5,800 years ago. Each specimen contained carbon with a distinctive signature found in milk fats. Further chemical comparisons to milk fats from grazing animals now living in Africa showed that ancient Saharans milked cattle, but not goats or sheep.

Large amounts of dairy fat on the African pottery reflect either good preservation in arid conditions or the use of fat-rich products such as butter that store well and can be digested by lactose-intolerant individuals, Craig says.

Macalester hires Tomas Adalsteinsson as new head golf coach

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Macalester College announces the hiring of Tomas Adalsteinsson as its new men's and women's head golf coach.? Adalsteinsson is a former golfer for Iceland's national team and in 2000 placed 25th at the European team championship.? In 2001 he was Icelandic Junior champion and Icelandic Junior Tour champion.?

The head boys? varsity golf coach at Lakeville South High School in Lakeville, Minn., Adalsteinsson replaces Martha Nause, who resigned recently following 12 years at Macalester.?? Prior to gaining the Lakeville South position, he was head boys? coach at University High School in San Francisco and a junior instructor at Keilir Golf Club in Iceland.

Adalsteinsson led Lakeville South during the recently-completed season to second place in the South Suburban Conference.? The team set two school records during the season, and ended fifth in its section, only four shots from first place and a spot in the state tournament.

?I had a great time coaching at Lakeville South and the team has a bright future ahead,? said coach Adalsteinsson.? ?I am excited for the opportunity to continue developing the strong golf program Coach Nause has built at Macalester.? I want to thank her for that, and also (Director of Athletics) Kim Chandler and everyone on the search committee for seeing me as a good fit for the two teams.? As soon as I got to campus I felt that this is where I should be, and I can't wait to get started.?

As a youth in Iceland, Adalsteinsson was a dedicated soccer player, and his father was head coach of the Icelandic women?s national soccer team.? In his teens, a hamstring injury led him to shift his focus from soccer to golf and as a golfer he played on the Icelandic youth national teams from 1998-2003. He has experience coaching both golf and soccer.? Last fall Adalsteinsson served as an assistant women?s soccer coach at Carleton College and for the last year he has been a staff coach for Eden Prairie Soccer Club.?

Adalsteinsson is a graduate of the University of Iceland and received his Master's in Sports Psychology from John F. Kennedy University in California.? After graduating with a Master?s Degree in Sport Psychology, Adalsteinsson has provided sport psychology consultation to individuals and teams.

Elon returns top batter, loses pitcher to baseball draft

ELON ? The leading hitter on the Elon University baseball team will stay with the Phoenix for his season senior despite being selected in last week?s draft.

A pitcher continuing to try to return to form after surgery said he?ll sign a professional contract today.

That?s the immediate fallout from the draft for Elon, which has been a regular Southern Conference contender.

Catcher Alex Swim, who was selected in the 36th round of the draft, said he informed scouts that he would be playing his senior season for Elon in 2013.

Meanwhile, pitcher Jim Stokes, who has two seasons of eligibility remaining, is taking an offer from the Cleveland Indians, who picked him in the 22nd round.

Swim, who batted .357 this year, was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals. He had been contacted earlier in the draft process by other organizations.

?I told them basically not to waste a pick,? Swim said Thursday. ?It?s still an honor to get drafted and to know that somebody is willing to pay you to play with their team.?

Swim was behind the plate for most of Elon?s games during the past season, when he compiled a 25-game hitting streak. He ranks ninth in school history with 222 career hits through three seasons as he has posted a .316 career batting average.

?He had a plan and a number and he stuck to it,? Elon coach Mike Kennedy said of Swim?s outlook on the draft. ?He?ll have a chance to play pro ball. Sometimes there are certain situations and it can be best to stay in college. It?s good to see a kid not give in to the pressure (to turn pro).?

Swim, who played in the Cape Cod League in 2011, is bypassing summer leagues this year. That should allow his back, which was the source of some discomfort late in the season, time to rest. The player from Greensboro also said family factors weighed in his decision to remain at Elon for another year.

?It?s best to stay,? he said after working with the youth baseball camp this week at Latham Park on campus. ?There?s always next year.?

Stokes, a right-hander, is about 15 months removed from Tommy John surgery and he struggled at times in 2012 for the Phoenix after taking a redshirt season in 2011. He posted a 1-3 record and 7.57 earned run average in what became a limited role.

?After the season, I didn?t know what to expect going into the draft,? Stokes said.

Still, scouts came to watch Stokes and had seen enough in 2010, when he was a freshman, that drew their attention.

?I definitely didn?t like to have the season I had,? Stokes said. ?Cleveland obviously sees something in me. This is a good time for me to start my professional career.?

Kennedy described Stokes, who also worked at the youth camp, as a pitcher with a good arm and a player drafted on potential who could turn out to be a steal for the Indians. ?Hopefully with some pro pitching coaching, they?ll figure out some things that click with him,? the coach said.

Stokes, 21, has been told he?ll be assigned to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the Class A New York-Penn League. He expects to begin as a reliever.

Compared to many recent seasons, the Phoenix had a relatively low number of draft-eligible players.

?Anytime guys are getting drafted, I?m a firm believer it helps your program,? Kennedy said. ?It?s what we tell kids when we?re (recruiting them) that we have a plan.?

Elon had one signee from the incoming class of freshmen drafted. That was Tyler Manez, a 6-foot-3 left-handed pitcher from Plainedge High School in North Massapequa, N.Y. He went to the Houston Astros with the first pick of the 32nd round, though so far Elon coaches are expecting that he?ll stick with the college route.

--?Elon outfielder Niko Fraser, a three-year starter who missed most of the latter half of the 2012 season with a concussion and its ensuing complications, has been cleared to resume regular workouts after testing this week. He?ll be a senior in 2013.

(AP) ? Usain Bolt's publicist says her client was involved in a minor car crash in Jamaica but is not hurt.

Carole Beckford says the three-time Olympic champion was returning from a party with friends in the early hours Sunday when he was involved in a "fender bender" in Jamaica's capital of Kingston.

Beckford tells The Associated Press "there were no injuries at all" and the Bolt is "fine and resting at home."

Radio Jamaica says fellow Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell was traveling in another car at the time and was at the scene of Bolt's accident.

Bolt and Powell had just returned to Jamaica after competing at the Diamond League meet in Norway.

A police spokesman could not be immediately reached for details of the accident.
