Prominent climate change denier now says he was wrong

Richard Muller, who directed a Koch-funded climate change project, has undergone a 'total turnaround' on his stance on global warming, which he now admits is caused by human activity.

Climate Watch Senior Editor sat down with Muller to talk about his upcoming book, "Energy for Future Presidents," his view of global warming as "secular religion." Posted June 15, 2012.

This, according to?Richard?A.?Muller, professor of physics at the University of California, Berkely, a MacArthur fellow and co-founder of the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and hundreds of other climatologists around the world came to such conclusions years ago, but the difference now is the source:?Muller?is a long-standing, colorful critic of prevailing climate science, and the Berkeley project was heavily funded by the Charles Koch Charitable Foundation, which, along with its libertarian petrochemical billionaire founder Charles G. Koch, has a considerable history of backing groups that deny climate change.

In an opinion piece in Saturday?s New York Times titled ?The Conversion of a Climate-Change Skeptic,??Muller?writes:

?Three years ago I identified problems in previous climate studies that, in my mind, threw doubt on the very existence of global warming. Last year, following an intensive research effort involving a dozen scientists, I concluded that global warming was real and that the prior estimates of the rate of warming were correct. I?m now going a step further: Humans are almost entirely the cause.?

The Berkeley project?s research has shown,?Muller?says, ?that the average temperature of the earth?s land has risen by 2? degrees Fahrenheit over the past 250 years, including an increase of 1? degrees over the most recent 50 years. Moreover, it appears likely that essentially all of this increase results from the human emission of greenhouse gases.?

He calls his current stance ?a total turnaround.?

Tonya Mullins, a spokeswoman for the Koch Foundation, said the support her foundation provided, along with others, has no bearing on results of the research.

?Our grants are designed to promote independent research; as such, recipients hold full control over their findings,? Mullins said in an email. ?In this support, we strive to benefit society by promoting discovery and informing public policy.?

Some leading climate scientists said?Muller?s?comments show that the science is so strong that even those inclined to reject it cannot once they examine it carefully.

Michael E. Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, said?Muller?s?conversion might help shape the thinking of the ?reasonable middle? of the population ?who are genuinely confused and have been honestly taken in? by attacks on climate science.

On his Facebook page, Mann wrote: ?There is a certain ironic satisfaction in seeing a study funded by the Koch Brothers ? the greatest funders of climate change denial and disinformation on the planet ? demonstrate what scientists have known with some degree of confidence for nearly two decades: that the globe is indeed warming, and that this warming can only be explained by human-caused increases in greenhouse gas concentrations. I applaud?Muller?and his colleagues for acting as any good scientists would, following where their analyses led them, without regard for the possible political repercussions.?

Will lack of Penn State 'death penalty' uncover more NCAA issues?

Welcome back after the off-season from hell.

Penn State's torturous timeline, spanning from last November to last week, cast a pall over the sport that could have hardly been fathomed this time last year.

Jerry Sandusky's pathetic mug shot, the Freeh Report, Joe Paterno's eradicated legacy and NCAA President Mark Emmert's recitation Monday of unprecedented sanctions have left a football nation dazed and confused.

"In one form or fashion it has affected us," Commissioner Jim Delany said in his opening statements this week at Big Ten media days.

The Aug. 30 opening bell can't get here soon enough as we eagerly anticipate the return to trivial pursuits. Before we move on, though, we reflect.

What happened here? What happens now?

The lasting take-away of Penn State is biblically obvious: the consolidation of power in the hands of a few, over time, is poisonous.

Lord Acton, the historian and moralist, opined in another century: "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

Acton's next line, not as often repeated, is "great men are almost always bad men."

Nowhere is it easier for power to corrupt than in the upstairs office of a powerful football coach. The thirst for victory, combined with money, combined with alma mater mania, has elevated conquering coaches to kings.

The reason Penn State's insular circle thought they could conceal secrets and handle problems internally is because they always had.

Paterno's avuncular "JoePa" public persona, philanthropy and win-loss record provided cover for more ruthless, pragmatic, day-to-day operations.

Power corrupted at incomparable levels at Penn State, but it also corrupted Jim Tressel at Ohio State, and maybe Pete Carroll at USC.

"No one program, no one person, no matter how popular, no matter how successful, can be allowed to derail the soul of an institution," Commissioner Mike Slive said at the Southeastern Conference's recent media days.

No one would disagree, yet some would also note a school in his king-maker conference, Alabama, practices the custom of erecting a statue of each coach who has won a national football championship.

Nick Saban, two-time Bowl Championship Series winner in Tuscaloosa, walks by his bust every day on the way to work.

A good rule of thumb is to never build a statue of anyone living, and rarely of anyone dead.

Someone recently suggested to Saban that the football coach at Alabama, dating to Bear Bryant, had potentially dangerous power.

"Well, you know, it's not true if that's the perception," Saban said.

CANADA: Saskatchewan diocese elects first indigenous bishop

[Anglican Journal] The Ven. Adam Halkett, archdeacon of Saskatchewan and priest-in-charge at St. Joseph?s, Montreal Lake First Nations, has been elected the first diocesan indigenous bishop of Saskatchewan.?He was chosen July 28 by the diocese?s general assembly in Prince Albert.

The election and consecration of a diocesan indigenous bishop is part of Mamuwe Isi Mywachimowin (?Together in the Gospel?), a proposal adopted by the indigenous council and executive committee of Saskatchewan and approved by the metropolitan and executive committee of the province of Rupert?s Land in 2011.

?It?s wonderful to see the vision of the elders fulfilled,? said Bishop-elect Halkett. ?The healing journey with the elders, the youth and the whole church continues mamuwe.?

The council of elders nominated Archdeacon Halkett along with two other candidates: Canon Park Buck and the Rev. Beryl Whitecap, who withdrew her name before the assembly met. The election was held in a traditional manner with delegates lining up behind their preferred nominees.

As a sign of the new healing and new beginnings undertaken by the diocese,

the assembly took place at the Senator Allen Bird Memorial Gym?on the very site of the former Prince Albert-All Saints Indian Residential School.

?This is another example of the new and creative ways that the Spirit is leading us on our journey of healing and reconciliation in the Council of the North,? said Archbishop David Ashdown, metropolitan of the province of Rupert?s Land.

Added Bishop Michael Hawkins of the diocese of Saskatchewan: ?This general assembly was a profound experience of gospel healing and unity. I look forward to working and walking alongside Adam, together in the gospel.? Hawkins also acknowledged the elders who made the nominations: ?The council has been a tremendous source of wisdom and encouragement to me and the diocese.?

He noted that the assembly also elected a new indigenous council. ?With a new bishop, council of elders and indigenous council, we are well-equipped to renew the church for gospel ministry and mission in northern Saskatchewan. We are walking the dream!?

Bishop Lydia Mamakwa, bishop of the northern Ontario region of the diocese of Keewatin, was also gratified with the outcome. ?I?m so happy for Saskatchewan,? she said.? It?s been a long journey and a lot of work. We give thanks to our creator for taking them this far in their journey.?

SEO Strategies - Optimize Online Press Releases For CRM - PDF

SEO Strategies - Optimize Online Press Releases For CRM

In a fiercely competitive online atmosphere, press releases can be a valuable resource for increasing
your company's overall visibility, but only if they're optimized effectively. Remember, this tactic is no
longer just about publicizing your latest news. Instead, it's about creating visibility through multiple
channels that allow you to connect through content, reaching those audience segments that are
relevant to your company and purpose.
When optimized correctly, online press releases can do all of the following:

* Boost Search Engine Rankings for SEO
* Drive Targeted Traffic
* Build Brand Awareness
* Save Money on Pay-Per-Click Campaigns
* Usurp Position From Competition on SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages)
Despite these numerous benefits, however, many companies continue to use unoptimized press
releases that don't work as well as they could. Instead, these lazy releases stagnate in Deleted
folders and are never indexed by the major search engines. Remember, this isn't a traditional press
release like Grandma used to write.
Unlike traditional press releases, which were succinct and written with readers in mind, online press
releases need to be more carefully crafted. An online press release (like SEO in general), is half art
and half science - in addition to appealing to readers, they need to be optimized for search engines in
order to drive results. A few simple modifications could increase their effectiveness drastically,
providing far more SEO benefit to your online presence than they would have otherwise.
So how do you write and optimize an online press release that will drive tangible results?
First and foremost, employ common sense and reason. No one wants to read something that isn't
newsworthy, and these type of releases won't garner any publicity. In fact, according to a DM News
survey, 98 percent of journalists are online every day, and almost 75 percent are searching for press
releases. So before you write anything, ask yourself if the story you're thinking about publicizing is
newsworthy. As a member of your industry, whatever that may be, would you take the time to read it?
If not, don't waste your time. Wait for a story that will make a splash and matter to your audience.
Next, identify the keywords your press release will utilize. Align them with the keywords and phrases
you're already optimizing in order to derive the highest SEO benefit. In order to make sure you're
choosing those with the most potential, start with some quick competitive analysis. This can be done
by performing a News search that includes your keyword on Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, or any other
popular search engine.
Looking at the results page, you'll know if this is the right keyword or phrase to chase? How? By the
amount of competition it presents. If you notice that most of the results are spread out over a longer
time span, this keyword is a good opportunity because there clearly isn't as much competition. On the
other hand, if your search turns up ten stories from the past few days, you'll know that this term is

much more competitive due to the many stories you're competing against.
Now that you're aware of the competitive landscape, determine the amount of flexibility you have to
work with. As I mentioned before, if you're attempting to enter a space that's crowded with recent
news, you'll need to focus on a single keyword phrase, while if you have more flexibility, you can
chase several permutations of your keywords.
In the end, it's a better idea to focus on specific online niches, crafting your press release in a way
that you know will appeal to your potential readers. Your press release will be much more potent if it
gets noticed within a specific sector than if it languishes away in relative obscurity, hidden somewhere
in a crowd of similar stories.
This simple research phase can make all the difference in whether your press release gets noticed,
but it's often the most overlooked aspect of this strategy. Don't get trapped milling around in the
virtual crowd - stand out and get noticed by optimizing around the keywords that hold the most
potential.
Once you've completed this critical research step, you will have identified the most potent keywords
with which to write your press release. Now you're finally ready to start writing!
Start with the headline, the most important part of your press release. Include your most competitive
keywords in this headline. While it may be tempting to simply combine all of your keywords, it's
imperative that your headline remains both condensed yet descriptive. Think like a journalist and a
searcher here. Stick to the basics, providing the essential facts and the who, what, where, when, and
why. All of the major search engines start by looking for keywords in headlines, so be sure to give
them what they're looking for in order to capitalize on relevancy. Observe these rules and you'll also
attract those all important human readers.
After you've crafted the headline, it's time to start writing the body of your press release. Begin by
isolating several related phrases to maximize your SEO potential. For example, if you're publicizing
the launch of your new SEO site, your headline may be something like Fusionbox Launches SEO
Microsite.
Don't fall victim to the constraints you'll encounter with the use of just one keyword or phrase. Instead,
use a web of related keyphrases to expand your reach. Alternate permutations like "Fusionbox
Launches Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Microsite," for example, will invariably broaden your
scope and influence. These various combinations allow your release to appear in News results for
these related phrases as well.
Try rotating various combinations of keywords in the body of the release as well to create more
diversity and cover more ground. For example:
"Fusionbox, a Denver SEO agency, recently lauched a new microsite devoted to search engine
optimization (SEO) strategies. The company, which specializes in search engine marketing (SEM),
web design, and web development, needed a unique platform to reach clients looking for optimization
solutions and showcase their SEO services."
Rather than using the same keyword phrase repetitively and sounding like a broken record (which
drives human readers away), this sentence sprinkles other keyword combinations that expand the

SEO value of the release without detracting from readability.
Be creative here. Don't try to overload on keywords or your release won't flow like good writing
should. A good rule of thumb is to write with an eye for your keywords, incorporating them into the
release when natural opportunities appear.
Once you've finished writing your release, read over it again and circle your keywords in red. Does it
sound natural or look like a finished New York Times word search? If so, take a step back and ensure
your work flows while maintaining general SEO copywriting best practices and a healthy keyword
density.
Next, look for instances of your keywords where you could include a backlink to your site. This will
allow you to build valuable incoming links to your site, which are a major determinant of search
engine positioning. Remember to use the full URL in your link if you can't employ anchor text, as this
will ensure your link is indexed and available to search engines and readers alike.
1
Finally, you've finished writing your optimized press release. Now you're ready to begin the
submission process. There are an infinite number of press release sites on the Internet, but some are
far superior to others. Before you go about submitting anywhere and everywhere, make sure the sites
you're submitting content to are crawled by the major search engines, or else you won't get any SEO
benefit from your release.
Many of the more popular distribution services are indexed by Google News, Yahoo News, and
others, but make sure by searching for related stories on these engines and noting where the top
results originate. This way, you'll get a better idea of which distribution channels specific search
engines favor.
Target these for your own release to ensure your content will be visible where it matters, especially as
Universal search [http://running-with-the-bulls-seo.blogspot.com/2007/09/blended-search-changes-
internet.html] rolls onto the scene, showing News links among the regular search results.
As you can see, optimizing your press release is a somewhat complex endeavor. Still, considering
that an optimized release is an essential ingredient to a search engine marketing (SEM) campaign for
its ability to boost search engine rankings, drive targeted traffic, build brand awareness, and even
help you gain digital real estate on the SERPs (search engine results page), the juice is definitely
worth the squeeze.
Just observe the best practices I've described above and you'll build your online presence in this
fiercely competitive online atmosphere where visibility is everything. An optimized press release will
allow you to connect with your target audience through content while deriving tangible SEO benefits.

Yokohama Rubber Supports Ecological Preservation at Laojun Mountain, Yunnan Province, China

Tokyo, July 27, 2012 (JCN) -?Yokohama Rubber (China) Co., Ltd., has begun a project to support education tied to ecological protection in Heyuan, an ethnic minority village in the Laojun Mountain Nature Reserve in Lijiang, Yunnan Province.

The project is being carried out aspart of efforts by Yokohama Rubber (China) termed "primeval forests and greenery environmental protection."

As a model for sustainable growth and ecological preservation in the Heyuan community, the project will offer educational support to needy families and will help prevent the illegal felling of trees.

Targets of the project are families actively cooperating in ecological protection, who, as a result, see their economic income decline for a period of time due to long cultivation cycles of economic crops.

The costs of sending their children to school then become a heavy burden. Families receiving the support will be selected at an assembly of the villagers.

The project is expected to stop the illegal felling of trees byvillagers to supplement their incomes and promote to preserve in turn private forests in Heyuan.

The project for sustainable growth and ecological preservation in the Heyuan community at Laojun Mountain in Lijiang was launched in 2011. These environmental protection activities are new in CSR efforts.

Yokohama Rubber (China) Co., Ltd., was established in the city of Shanghai in November 2005 as Yokohama Rubber's holding company to exercise overall control of its tire and multiple-business (MB) operations in China.

Plastic Surgery in Costa Rica - Free Article Directory

Health and Fitness | Weight Loss | * Written by Dr.Oscar Su?rez | Friday, 27 July 2012 02:06 | Word Count: 499

Have you ever felt that your body is not the way you want it to be? Has there been any part of it that you would like to change? The good news is that nowadays most changes are possible when it comes to the human body! The only thing is, however, that you must be careful where you go to do these changes. Plastic surgery can be very dangerous if you are in the wrong hands. For that, I recommend Costa Rica plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery in Costa Rica is very safe, and even though you get great quality procedures, you pay a lot less, and the plastic surgeons are very professional! But still, you must be careful about choosing the right place. Keep reading if you want some tips on how to choose the right place to get plastic surgery!

One important thing you should do is to investigate. The web is a great place for that. If you find a clinic where you think you could get you cosmetic surgery done, Google it! Find out about the quality of their work, how much experience they have, and if possible, what others think about them. All that will help you to come to a conclusion whether the clinic is good enough or not. Plastic surgery in Costa Rica usually is of good quality, but it?s always good to make sure. Cosmetic surgery is very important, so you must take all this information into consideration.

Another aspect that you should take into account is the salubrity of the clinic. This is very important because if the place is not clean enough, you could get an infection. Therefore, when you are trying to decide, walk into the clinic and look around. Analyze whether there are alcohol dispensers (which most clinics and hospitals have in Costa Rica). Do the doctors use rubber gloves? Are the janitors cleaning up? Do the doctors sterilize the tools? Those are the questions that must be answered.

Last, but not least, socialize with the plastic surgeon that will perform the cosmetic surgery. Get to know his/her attitude. Most people in Costa Rica are friendly, but there are exceptions, and you must make sure that this person is not one of them. If you are wondering why, the reason is that this person is going to have your life and health in his/her hands, so it is a good idea to know that s/he will care enough.

To conclude, cosmetic surgery is possible, but you must think about where to do it. Plastic surgery in Costa Rica is a great option. Costa Rica plastic surgeons are great, and you pay less. However, you must make sure that the clinic where the procedure will be done has been well investigated (by you), that it is clean, and that the plastic surgeon is friendly enough. Follow these three tips and you will see that the clinic you choose will be the best option of all, so choose well, and enjoy the changes!

Rebel general calls for Syria interim government

A former Syrian general who is now trying to plot the downfall of the Assad regime from a refugee camp in Turkey has called for an inclusive interim government to avert a descent into all-out civil war.

"The way out of the current crisis is the formation of an interim government that includes all ethnic groups in Syria and that works in coordination with the military council," Brigadier General Fayez Amr told AFP.

Amr is a member of the military council made up of Syrian army deserters who are staying in Apaydin camp in southern Turkey's Hatay province, some four kilometres (two and a half miles) from the border.

Turkey has provided sanctuary to deserting senior army officers who are working with the rebel Free Syrian Army to encourage mass defections to its ranks.

Turkish officials say 27 defected generals and their families are currently staying in the camp. The government has barred access to the camp for journalists, blocking any interviews with the rebels.

The deserters prefer speaking to the media by telephone or Skype.

In a telephone interview, Amr complained of lack of unity within the Syrian opposition.

"Let's not deceive ourselves. I cannot see any unity among Syrian opposition factions," the general told AFP.

"There is no unity within the Free Syrian Army, nor within the Syrian National Council."

As the fighting in Syria has intensified since a bomb attack this month that killed the regime's key security aides, fears are rising over the lack of agreement among opposition factions on leadership for a transitional government that could be a credible alternative to President Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian National Council (SNC) has so far acted as the international face of the revolution, but it has been unable to unite dozens of disparate rebel factions.

"We established the higher council with the army defectors in Turkey, but this council has not received adequate support from the SNC," Amr said.

The defector also sounded cautious despite reports that rebel forces were advancing in Syria's northern city Aleppo to counter regime forces after seizing several border posts along the Turkish frontier.

"The revolutionaries have made advances on the ground, but we should not forget how merciless the regime is and what heavy weaponry it possesses," Amr said.

"Even though 70 percent of Aleppo was captured by the revolutionaries, there are ongoing massacres in other cities."

The general accused the regime in Damascus of stirring an ethnic war and slammed the international community for its failure to adopt a serious stance to stop the bloodshed.

When asked by AFP, Amr declined to comment on how they spend their time in the camp but thanked the Turkish government for its hospitality.

"But I have one complaint about Arab governments. No official has visited us thus far," he said.

Europe?s True Crisis

Another day, another set of crisis headlines?but there is a silver lining: Finally, Europeans are being forced to face up to decades' worth of fundamentally dishonest politics. Since the 1970s, one government after the next has spent, borrowed, and then inflated its way out of the subsequent debt. Then they recovered?only to spend, borrow, and inflate once again. Not coincidentally, this cycle was most severe in countries with weaker democracies. Spain ceased to be a dictatorship only after Franco's death in 1975, Greece was ruled by a military junta from 1967 to 1974, and Italy has had more than 60 governments since World War II. Successive leaders in all of those countries have tried to "buy" the electorate with elaborate pensions, state-sector employment, and other perks. Banks across the continent and around the world have greedily facilitated them.

Skydiver Felix Baumgartner completes 17-mile dive

Daredevil Felix Baumgartner this morning landed from his 17-mile dive back to Earth from the edge of space, in a plummet that reached a speed of 600 mph in 20 seconds.

Mission Control gave the go ahead this morning for the launch, saying "God Speed Felix" from Roswell, N.M., where the mission is being hosted. Baumgartner, an Austrian national, was lifted in a capsule carried afloat by a huge helium balloon.

Click Here for Pictures: Felix Baumgartner's Dive

The balloon took 90 minutes to get to 90,000 feet. The crane holding the capsule went up as fast as it could to get the capsule under the 210-foot tall balloon as it rose. After he jumped, Baumgartner was in freefall for five minutes. After five minutes, his parachute opened, at which point it took another seven to10 minutes to descend to Earth.

"The pressure is huge, and we not only have to endure but excel," Baumgartner told ABC News before the jump. "We're excellently prepared, but it's never going to be a fun day. I'm risking my life, after all."

[Related: Skydiver's incredible jump from stratosphere]

Red Bull is financing the daredevil skydive from space. The mission is named Stratos. It was five years of planning by a team of experts, many volunteering their services, to break several records in one breathtaking plunge back to Earth.

The Records Baumgartner had planned to break included those for the first person to break the sound barrier outside of an aircraft, the record for freefall from the highest altitude, and that for the longest freefall time, expected to be five minutes and 35 seconds, and that for the highest-manned balloon flight.

Baumgartner would be breaking a 52-year-old record, and he recruited the man who set the record, the legendary retired Air Force Col. Joe Kittinger, for advice.

Kittinger jumped from a balloon Aug. 16, 1960, at an altitude of 102,900 feet, and fell for almost five minutes before opening a parachute to slow his descent at 18,000 feet.

He made history for the highest-balloon ascent, the highest parachute jump and the fastest speed by a human through the atmosphere.

Woman survives theater shooting, thanks to boyfriend?s father

Heidi Bergman Sodani, whose 22-year-old daughter Farrah was wounded in the Aurora shootings says her daughter is asking if "everyone else is ok?"

By Marcus Harun
NBC News

A 22-year-old victim of the mass shooting in Aurora, Colo., will soon be released from the hospital, a recovery credited to the quick thinking of her boyfriend?s father.?

Michael White Sr. had met his son?s girlfriend, Farrah Soudani, only one other time before they attended the midnight showing of ?The Dark Knight Rises,? accompanied by White Sr.?s own girlfriend and his daughter.

About 15 minutes into the movie, when a gunman began firing in the crowded theater, Soudani was hit. Her boyfriend, 33-year-old Michael White Jr., also was hit and unable to help her.

White Sr., a 20-year U.S. Air Force veteran, sprang into action.

?The guy just kept shooting ? so then I heard a pause; I figured he was reloading, and I grabbed my daughter and my girlfriend and I grabbed them by the head and told them, ?Escape, go this way, get out, stay low, go out this way,?? said White Sr., 55.

?

But Soudani?s leg and abdomen were torn open by shrapnel. Her boyfriend, White Jr., had been shot in his torso and couldn?t move.

?I saw the gunman start shooting again so I took off my shirt and I put the shirt onto her, holding her guts in,? White Sr. said.

He tried to slow her severe bleeding while shots were still flying. He looked up and saw the gunman walk up the steps toward them and reload. White Sr. said that?s when he jumped onto Soudani, trying to block her from the next gunshots.

In two remarkable stories of survival, one woman saves the life of her best friend, and a father protects his son's girlfriend after she was badly wounded. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

?If he was going to take out somebody, let him take out one person and I?ll save her,? White Sr. said. ?Then her and my son can still have a life together hopefully.?

But before the next gunshot was fired, suddenly, the lights came on and the alarm system sounded.

The gunman, standing two rows in front of White Sr., turned around at the sound of the alarm and ceased fire.

As most people were trying to escape, White Sr.?s girlfriend ran back into the the theater when she realized the whole family didn?t make it out. ?She said she held Soudani?s head in her lap and said, ?You can?t go to sleep. Don?t go to sleep. Look at me.?

They all survived.

Soudani had emergency surgery within hours, and her kidney and spleen were removed. Her stomach, left knee and diaphragm were all seriously injured, and she now faces up to three more surgeries, doctors said.

The human body only holds about nine units of blood, doctors told them, and Soudani had already been given at least 40 units.

White Jr. had surgery after a bullet cracked his rib, and he has now been discharged from the hospital.

?I?m in debt to him for the rest of my life??
Soudani has been in and out of consciousness but still maintains her sense of humor and also her caring nature,?Soudani?s mother, Heidi Bergman Soudani, told NBC News.

?I am so grateful I have my daughter; a lot of other people don?t have their kids or their loved ones because of what happened,? she said. ?She is a very strong person. She is feisty and she is not giving up.?

While lying in her hospital bed, Soudani has asked repeatedly if everyone else is OK, Bergman Soudani said.

Both of Farrah Soudani?s parents are very thankful for the White family?s heroic acts that saved their daughter?s life.

?I am in debt to him for the rest of my life,? said her father, Sam Soudani. ?I really can?t describe it in words. I came up and hugged him and I gave him a kiss.?

White Jr. and Soudani have been in a relationship only for a few months, and the shooting has brought them ? and their families ? even closer together.

?The first time I met her she was somebody that you couldn?t get upset with,? White Sr. said of Farrah Soudani. ?She was respectful to me when we first met. It?s just something I knew that if she went out with my son she would make him very happy and I know he would make her very happy.?

Despite all his efforts, White Sr. says he is not a hero, he?s ?just Mike.?

?My son was a hero because he was trying to get up and save her but he couldn?t move because he was shot, so he was trying to crawl over,? White said. ?There are other people that are heroes.?

Bailed-out banks still struggling to repay government

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hundreds of bailed-out banks are still struggling to repay taxpayers and will soon find it even harder to make required dividend payments to the Treasury, according to a report on Wednesday by the watchdog for the government bailout program.

Of the 707 banks that received taxpayer money from the government's Troubled Asset Relief Program starting in 2008, also known as TARP, about half have repaid the Treasury.

However, 137 of those banks used a government-loan program to repay their taxpayer debts, according to the watchdog's quarterly report to Congress.

And of the 325 banks still propped up with taxpayer money, 203 have missed dividend or interest payments, with some missing as many as 13 payments since receiving capital injections at the height of the financial crisis, said the report.

Adding to their woes, the dividend that the bailed-out banks are required to pay to Treasury is set to increase to 9 percent from the current 5 percent as early as 2013.

"Those banks are not able to raise the capital that is required to get out of TARP," said Christy Romero, the special inspector general for the bailout program.

"We are very concerned about those banks, and want those banks to stand on their own feet without government assistance," she said.

Treasury has been trying to exit the bailout programs that have been criticized by Republican lawmakers for excessive government intervention. And Obama administration officials repeatedly stress that the bank bailouts, including the one used to directly inject capital into banks, have earned taxpayers more than $19 billion.

This week, the Treasury said it would sell preferred stock and debt in 12 of the bailed-out banks. In June, Treasury successfully raised some $200 million from the sale of preferred stock in seven bailed-out banks.

Treasury has been careful in saying that it will exit programs when the time is right and would not make decisions for political reasons.

"We're continuing to balance exiting our investments as soon as practicable and maximizing value for taxpayers," said Treasury spokesman Matt Anderson.

But Romero said it appears Treasury wants to exit their investments as soon as possible.

"If they want to do a swift government exit, (Treasury) has to ensure that financial stability continues otherwise the purpose of TARP is not met," Romero said, adding that she has not seen the analysis from Treasury that she thinks is necessary to make decisions on whether to exit a TARP bank.

According to the inspector general's report, taxpayers have now lost $5.5 billion on its investment in insurer American International Group. The government's remaining investment in the company is $30 billion, down from the initial $180 billion.

Same adaptations evolve across different insects

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? The famous biologist Stephen J. Gould once asked: If we rerun the tape of life, would the outcome of evolution be the same? For years, scientists have questioned whether evolution is predictable, or whether chance events make such predictability unlikely.

A study published online July 23 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences finds that in the case of insects that developed resistance to a powerful plant toxin, the same adaptations have occurred independently, in separate species in different places and times.

The paper examines 18 insect species across four orders -- beetles, butterflies and moths, flies, and true bugs -- that all feed on plants containing powerful toxins called cardenolides.

Common to milkweeds and foxglove, cardenolides are lethal to nearly all insects and function effectively as a defense against pests. Cardenolides work by binding to a cell's sodium pump, one of the most fundamental systems found in all animal cells. The sodium pump works when an essential enzyme (Na,K-ATPase) carries important elements, sodium and potassium, across the cell membrane. Cardenolides bind to the enzyme and disable it, thereby shutting down cells, which results in severe damage.

Among the 18 insects surveyed, the researchers found a few methods that the insects use to resist cardenolides. In monarch butterflies and a species of leaf beetle, for example, resistance is due to a specific mutation -- called N122H -- of the Na,K-ATPase gene. The mutation reduces cardenolide binding to the sodium pump enzyme.

"Already knowing how monarchs deal with the toxin, we wanted to see if it was the same molecular solution used by beetles, flies and true bugs that are also resistant to cardenolides," said Anurag Agrawal, a Cornell professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and a co-author on the paper. Susanne Dobler, a professor of molecular evolution at Hamburg University, is the paper's lead author.

By examining molecular changes in the sodium pump gene, the researchers found the mutation N122H in all four orders of insects studied. Furthermore, they discovered a second mutation in the same gene that also conferred resistance in 11 of the 18 species.

"This is truly a remarkable level of evolutionary repeatability and suggests that evolving resistance to the plant toxin had very few effective options," said Agrawal.

The researchers tested the effectiveness of these gene changes by inserting the single Na,K-ATPase mutations into cell cultures and then dosing those cultures with cardenolides. They found the mutations gave the cells resistance, and when cells were given the two mutations that repeatedly evolved together, they had twice the resistance as cells with a single mutation, implying a synergistic effect.

The standard gene for the sodium pump is essentially the same in all insects, and even mammals carry the gene in a relatively unmodified form. The sodium pump thus originated from a common ancestor hundreds of millions of years ago and is central to the functioning of most animals. Out of that background, insects from different orders over the last 300 million years specialized on plants with cardenolides and evolved resistance independently, and in numerous cases, through exactly the same gene change.

"We can't rerun the tape of life, but we can look back over millions of years of evolutionary divergence and show that there has been tremendous repeatability, even at the molecular level," said Agrawal.

A good principle for categories is that there is only one place you would look for something.
If there was both Home Brew and Beer Making then which one of the two would you look in for brewing beer?

Automotive chargers are for automobiles, not motorcycles

It happened yet again. A guy went to jump start his motorcycle with a car charger, and it must have had one of the auto boost modes, and poof, there goes all the lights and electronics in the bike. You would be amazed at the amount of damage that was in the radio I just finished working on. That's two this week.

You can use these chargers for their low current modes for quick charging if you monitor them and take them off in a short period of time, but that's it.

Here is what happens:

High current chargers are not voltage regulated. Regulating that much current is prohibitively expensive. Instead, what the designer does is roughly estimates about how much current the dead battery can absorb, then switches in a much higher voltage, sometimes as high as 25-30 volts. (no load voltage) The vehicle never actually sees that much voltage because the high current going to the battery saturates the circuitry and pulls the voltage down to a manageable level.

The problem with using a motorcycle battery for this is that a bike battery can't absorb current at a rate as high as a car battery. When that happens, the higher input voltage does not sag like the designer intended it to. The result is blown capacitors, corrosive electrolyte from the capacitors all over the place, rusting the electronics, and if you are unlucky, you blow out semiconductors everywhere.

Even inexpensive chargers have automatic boost modes now. Do not ever attempt to start a bike with one, or you could very easily end up with thousands of dollars in damage to your bike's electronics.

Just a friendly warning.

CADILLAC -- The pain of the Colorado movie theater tragedy can be felt all across the country including Northern Michigan. One of the victims has family living in Cadillac.

Violet Strohm, the victim's Great Aunt says, "It was unbelievable, I mean how does that happen?"

18-year old AJ Boik is just one of 12 people who were shot and killed after a gunman barged into a Dark Knight Rises movie premiere. 71 people were shot Friday morning.

Boik was there with his girlfriend.

Kevin and Kathy Lytle, the victim's 2nd cousins say, "When the shooting started they got up right away to get out of the theater. AJ fell behind her and so she laid down on top of his body and waited. The shooting stopped for a little while and she tried to pull him out and couldn't. There was chaos and stampedes so she lost track of him."

At first AJ was reported missing and family didn't know if he was at the hospital, still inside the theater, or being questioned by police.

Kathy Lytle says "We knew the longer we didn't hear anything, the more likely that the news was not going to be good."

Days?before what the family describes as a nightmare, AJ dreamed of becoming an art teacher. He planned to attend Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.

Kevin and Kathy Lytle says, "He was a fun little kid smiling all the time, happy. Because of the miles we didn't see him grow up other than Facebook."

Instead his family is planning a funeral.

Violet Strohm says, "I wanted to go and be with my sister, but I just had surgery so I can't go and be with her."

Friends and family members have set up a memorial page on Facebook to honor those who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy.
