Death Valley takes top spot on the hot list

Gabriel Bouys / AFP-Getty Images

California's Death Valley is known for its heat, and now it will be known as home to the hottest place on Earth.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Nearly a century after the fact, California's Death Valley on Thursday was recognized as having posted the hottest temperature on Earth ??replacing Libya, which experts now say was a case of overcooked data.

A reading of 136.4 degrees Fahrenheit had been claimed at a Libyan outpost on Sept. 13, 1922. That stood as the record until Thursday's announcement by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) that a panel of experts had concluded otherwise.

As a result, the WMO now recognizes 134 degrees F (56.7 degrees Celsius) as the highest surface temperature ever recorded. The measurement came from Death Valley, Calif., on July 10, 1913.

In a study published Thursday, the experts said they had "identified five major concerns" with the Libya data, starting with "potentially problematic instrumentation" ? in other words, an unreliable thermometer.?

"Several experts informed the committee that this type of thermometer was more frequently used in private households rather than as official recording instruments," the group reported.

The "Bellani-Six thermometer" was already obsolete at the time and had a pointer that could easily be misread, introducing an error of as much as 12.6 degrees Fahrenheit, they noted.?

Other concerns included a?likely "inexperienced observer" who repeatedly entered temperatures on the wrong side of the log.

The reading was probably also taken at "an observation site over an asphalt-like material which was not representative of the native desert soil," the WMO said in a statement.

The new record does raise an obvious question: Was the Death Valley data any more reliable?

"That record was investigated pretty thoroughly by Dr. Arnold Court, a meteorology professor from California, back in the 1940s and determined to be valid,"?Randy Cerveny, an Arizona State University professor who was on the Libya committee, told NBC News.

Aug. 7, 2006: KSL-TV's John Hollenhorst introduces us to a man who lives in a very remote area of Death Valley.

Court determined the reading was "taken with good instruments by a trained weather observer," Cerveny added. "At this time, unless new evidence comes out, we will accept the record."

In a statement released by the university,?Cerveny said the Libya investigation required "significant sleuthing and a lot of forensic records work."?

But it came naturally, he said, noting that "in the heart of every meteorologist and climatologist?beats the soul of a detective."

Hostage prison guard saved by inmates' contraband cell phones

A South Carolina prison guard was released late last night following a tense five-hour standoff, after inmates using contraband cell phones tipped off authorities that the injured officer was being held hostage in a broom closet.

About 120 inmates in one dormitory of the Lee Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison in Bishopville, S.C., "overtook an officer" using homemade shanks and other weapons around 5 p.m. EDT, said department of corrections spokesman Clark Newsom.

The guard suffered lacerations on his face and was held hostage for five hours in a closet guarded by inmates, many of them convicted rapists and murderers.

Other inmates inside the prison alerted authorities to the guard's whereabouts by making phone calls from contraband mobile phones, which had previously been smuggled into the prison by throwing them over the perimeter fence, Newsom said.

The state department of corrections directed hostage negotiators and SWAT teams to the prison, where a standoff ensued for nearly five hours.

At 9:34 p.m. a special operations team stormed the prison and found the guard, freeing him within 15 minutes and suppressing the riot.

The guard, who officials have not identified, had "lacerations from homemade shanks but was in pretty good condition and did not seem to be injured seriously," said Newsom. Nevertheless, he was "taken to a local hospital by helicopter as a precaution."

The spokesman said the attack on the guard was a crime of "opportunity" and did not appear to have been planned.

Authorities did a search of the prison and confiscated contraband including cell phones. The prison remains on lockdown.

'Darksiders II' tops video game titles in August

(AP) ? U.S. retail sales of new video game hardware, software and accessories fell for the ninth straight month in August, according to research firm NPD Group.

Overall sales fell 20 percent to $515.6 million.

Software sales ? the video games themselves excluding PC titles ? fell 9 percent from a year earlier to $237.7 million. Sales of hardware such as Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 fell 39 percent to $150.6 million. Accessories slid 7 percent to $127.3 million.

The study from NPD Group tracks sales of new physical products ? about 50 percent of the total spending. Excluded are sales of used games and rentals as well as digital and social-network spending. The research firm estimates that when including these, Americans spent $989 million on games in August.

Despite the sharp decline, analyst Todd Mitchell called August's results a "potential bright spot" for video game software. The analyst with Brean Murray Carret noted that it was hardware that dragged on the month, while software sales dipped just 9 percent. New titles, he said, helped boost the year-long video game slump and teased a "possible inflection point."

"A number of blockbusters are expected to be released in September, which could boost software sales into positive territory for the first time in 2012," he added.

NPD also listed the top-selling games in August:

1. "Darksiders II" (THQ Inc)

2. "New Super Mario Bros 2" (Nintendo Co.)

3. "Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance" (Square Enix Inc.)

4. "NCAA Football 13" (Electronic Arts Inc.)

5. "Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes" (Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. Interactive)

6. "Sleeping Dogs" (Square Enix Inc.)

7. "Transformers: Fall of Cybertron" (Activision Blizzard Inc.)

8. "Batman: Arkham City" (Warner Bros. Interactive)

9. "Call of Duty: Black Ops" (Activision Blizzard)

10. "The Amazing Spider-Man" (Activision Blizzard)

Minecraft Self-building/repairing House Using Piston Mod and Cobble Generator

Minecraft Self-building/repairing House Using Piston Mod and Cobble Generator

Using the piston mod i constructed a fully self building and repairing house, it takes cobble from lava meeting water and moves it all around into the shape of a house with two floors. Piston mod is by far one of the best ive seen, and it potentially being in minecraft will be all the better. There are a couple limits with this, one is it wont go much faster then this, the pistons will collide with each other, and the cobble generator just cant keep up. Due to popular demand here is the save file... http://www.mediafire.com/?8r99y8a8zz92en7 You MUST have a working piston mod installed or it will crash, and since piston mod doesnt work yet on 1.4_01, you will probably need 1.4, here is the mod http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=247686&f=1032

Slow Down Your Beer Drinking with the Right Kind of Glass [Drinking]

Slow Down Your Beer Drinking with the Right Kind of GlassIf you're prone to drinking your Friday beer a little too fast, The Economist explains how you can slow yourself down just by drinking from the right kind of glass.

Beer glasses come in many shapes and sizes, usually designed to accentuate certain parts of the beer's taste. However, a study at the University of Bristol found that people drinking from straight glasses tend to drink slower than out of a flute:

A full straight glass of beer was polished off in 11 minutes, on average. A full flute, by contrast, was down the hatch in seven, which was also the amount of time it took to drink a full glass of lemonade, regardless of the type of vessel. If a glass started half-full, however, neither its shape nor its contents mattered. It was drunk in an average of five minutes.

Their theory is that when drinking from a straight glass, it's easier to judge how much you've already drunk when compared to a curved glass. It's hardly a guarantee, but if you're looking to pace yourself a little better, try ordering in a straight glass and see what happens. That is, of course, if you don't mind using bending the rules of beer and glass pairing.

Shape up! What sort of glass you drink from predicts how fast you drink | The Economist via The Kitchn

The Engadget Interview Nokia CEO Stephen Elop

It's been nearly a year since we spoke with Stephen Elop in New York City for the launch of the Lumia 800, a year that hasn't exactly been full of success on the financials front. Deputy National Police chief Sok Phal said the decision to expel Gottfrid Svartholm Warg came after visiting Swedish officials presented legal documents Tuesday on the case against him.

He and three Pirate Bay colleagues in 2009 were sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay 30 million kronor ($3.6 million) to major entertainment companies for copyright violations.

Svartholm Warg failed to show up at an appeal hearing in 2010. He was arrested last Thursday at the request of Swedish authorities at a home he had rented in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh.

Blast from the past: Dukakis to attack Romney?s gubernatorial record at DNC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Michael Dukakis fanatics at this year?s Democratic National Convention should start getting psyched: The 1988 Democratic presidential nominee is coming to town Tuesday.

?We will be flying down [to Charlotte] tomorrow morning and will be there for the balance of the convention talking about [former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt] Romney?s pathetic economic record as governor of Massachusetts,? Dukakis emailed The Daily Caller on Monday.

?Under Romney we were fourth from the bottom in job creation ? 47th out of 50,? he continued. ?If anybody thinks Romney knows how to turn the economy around, he is kidding himself. And when he left office, the state?s infrastructure was a wreck.?

A former Massachusetts governor himself, Dukakis said he does not have a speaking slot at the convention, but will be sitting on the convention floor with the Massachusetts delegation and doing a lot of press.

The Romney campaign hit back at Dukakis? attacks in an email to TheDC.

?It?s not surprising that a failed governor like Michael Dukakis who raised income taxes and busted the Massachusetts state budget is shilling for a failed president like Barack Obama who has raised taxes and is putting our country on a path to fiscal ruin,? said Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams.

?As governor, Mitt Romney cut taxes 19 times, lowered the Massachusetts unemployment rate to 4.7 percent, and closed a $3 billion deficit without raising taxes. As president, Barack Obama has punished private sector job creators with crushing new regulations and wasted billions of dollars on a failed, big government agenda that only a fellow liberal like Michael Dukakis could appreciate.?

George H.W. Bush soundly defeated Dukakis in the 1988 presidential election. Dukakis only garnered 10 states and the District of Columbia, amounting to 111 electoral votes versus Bush?s 426.

Houlton family with autistic son hopes to overcome stigma, raise ...

HOULTON, Maine ? Dominic Morse of Houlton likes biking, swimming, kayaking, movies, computers and toys that most 11-year-old boys do. But Dominic isn?t your typical boy; he is autistic.

?Looking back, there were a lot of things that were ?off? enough that if you strung them together you could see clearly that something was a little different with him,? said his mother Jacquie.

Though Dom hit the important milestones on time ? crawled at 6 months, walked four days before his first birthday, was in the 95th percentile for height, weight and such ? he didn?t speak.

?He would make noises, but he wouldn?t even attempt sounding out a word,? said Jacquie. ?He made no eye contact and loved to flap his hands. He was a jumping bean ? bounce, bounce, bounce everywhere just like Tigger.?

At his 2-year-old wellness check, Jacquie was told by her pediatrician not to be concerned because boys develop at a slower rate. So, she waited. At 3 years of age, still no speech. Jacquie once again heard how boys develop more slowly, but this time it wasn?t going to fly.

?My mom was convinced he had a hearing problem,? Jacquie said.

So the first step was a hearing evaluation.

?The first round of testing didn?t offer conclusive results because Dom didn?t know how to respond,? explained his mother. Then Jacquie learned about Child Development Services.

?This agency was a ticket to success,? she said. ?Without them, we would have been stuck back in the land of no talking and no diagnosis.?

The CDS staff set up the next round of evaluations and, though they did not arrive at a conclusive diagnosis, coordinated services, including occupational and speech therapy, for Dom.

Jacquie said he learned to hold utensils and also worked on proprioception, which is the ability to sense the position and movement of body parts. ?He didn?t feel like all of his body parts were connected,? she explained.

As part of his therapy for that, Dom now has a mini trampoline and a weighted blanket. ?He sleeps with 30 extra pounds of weight on him every night,? his mother said.

But after all the evaluations, Dom still didn?t have an actual diagnosis. ?He got the services because he qualified for them. But, for him to get what he really needed, we had to get an official diagnosis,? Jacquie said.

Researching her son?s symptoms prior to his 3-year-old physical, Jacquie discovered Dom had nine of the 13 markers for autism. That helped confirm her own suspicions and finally led to an official diagnosis and treatment.

After a physical evaluation, Dom started developmental and applied behavioral analysis therapies.

?Developmental therapy is basically a small school-type setting to work on his developmental skills,? said Jacquie. ?ABA therapy is intense. It is all about repetition, similar to muscle memory. You keep repeating an action and it finally sinks in. I cannot stress how much teaching all of these therapists had to put into Dominic. He literally had to be taught how a typical 3-year-old communicates, plays and explores.?

At age 5, Dom finally did the most remarkable thing a mother hopes for when he uttered the word ?mom.?

?I can?t even begin to tell you how I felt the first time he called me mom,? Jacquie said. ?I still tear up thinking about it.?

The next hurdle to overcome was school.

?I really started to worry that Dominic would never have any friends,? said Jacquie. ?I actually cried about it.?

But, that wouldn?t be the case.

?He still doesn?t know most of the kids? names and 90 percent of the time I have to remind him to say ?hi? back. It continually amazes me how accepting everyone is of Dom, especially the young kids who know something isn?t quite right with him. But, they love him anyway,? she said.

?His teachers have done very well,? said Jacquie?s mother, Carmel Bowers.

Even though Dom has therapy and support, he is still not mainstreamed in school. He requires an aide in class and he goes to special education for certain subjects, said his mother.

?Although his skills aren?t up to par with his peers,? said his mother, ?Josh [Dom?s stepfather] and I are incredibly proud of this boy. After all, if he wasn?t willing to do the work, he wouldn?t be where he is today.?

The family stressed that parents of autistic children should contact the school system so early intervention can be in place before the child gets to school.

?I am amazed at how many educators have no idea what autism is really all about,? Carmel said.

Dom?s family also stressed the need to alert law enforcement officials about persons in the community who are autistic.

An autistic person should register with state police or hometown police. Families who do register their loved one make it easier for authorities if the person gets lost or turned around. The police would have the person?s name, address, contact person, photo and phone number.

?No one knows what will set them off or how to calm the person down,? said Carmel. ?Autistic people have actions others do not understand. Their senses are very acute.

?Autistic people can get physically violent when their world is out of kilter,? she added. ?It?s fight or flight.?

Jacquie and Josh Morse also have another son, Jace, who is not autistic.

?Dom is very protective of Jace,? said Jacquie. ?He forgets about himself. He is an amazing big brother.?

When Jacquie took Jace to his wellness check, she was given a sheet to fill out. Some of the questions on it were: Does your child flap his hands? Does he make eye contact? Dejavu.

?I cried and cried right there in the waiting room,? she said. ?This little checklist is going to get so many children the help they need in a timely manner. If I had that checklist when Dom went to his wellness check at 18 months, he would have been on the road to typical sooner.?

?People in stores still watch,? said Carmel. ?I think they are trying to figure out what it is all about. A lot of parents don?t handle that well. There are only a few parents we meet who treat autism for what it is ? deal with it the best they can. Most deny it or are embarrassed by it.?

Carmel compares autism to having diabetes.

?You have to take insulin for a good quality of life,? she said. ?If you don?t take the insulin, your quality of life stinks. Acknowledge your child has it, deal with it the best way doctors say how to and go on with your life.?

Jacquie jumped through medical, educational and financial hoops to get her son help.

?The earlier the intervention, the sooner the road to typical recovery will be,? she said.

Families of autistic children in the U.S. spend $300 billion out of pocket for treatment, noted Jacquie. A lot of insurance companies will not cover the therapies. In Maine, autisim therapies are only covered by MaineCare.

Today, the phrase ?you?re austistic? is being used as demeaning like the words ?retard? or ?dummy? were years ago, Carmel said.

?That is giving the wrong impression,? she said. ?We want to help raise awareness that calling someone autistic is not OK. There is nothing wrong with being autistic.?

?They are individuals who are wired different,? added Jacquie.

For Dom, his mother says he has a memory like an elephant. He understands the who, what and where, but it is the why that is a mystery.

?He understands emotions and feelings, but he can?t express them,? said Jacquie.

Dom faces more challenges in a given day than other boys of his own age. And, with that, Jacquie and her family carry many worries about Dom as he gets older.

?I find him very intelligent,? said Carmel. ?I see Dom as a computer programmer or doing manual labor, something that is very routine, like a machinist or stocking shelves. I see him living in an enclosed community ? going to the same coffee shop every morning, working five days a week, spaghetti for supper on Tuesday and steak on Wednesday ? very Monk. The city would be hard. It?s over stimulating.?

In Maine, one in 67 children are diagnosed with some form of autism; nationally it is one in 88. Budget cuts are threatening services and Dom?s family hopes to raise awareness of autism in the community.

April is National Autism Awareness month. Locally, Dom?s family has raised more than $900 during the Walk for Autism the last couple of years. For the last three years, Autism Speaks has worked on a ?Light It Up Blue? campaign. On April 2 ? World Autism Day ? people are encouraged to show their support for autistic children by keeping a blue light lit.

?At the Morse household, we light it up blue year round,? Jacquie added.

You can read Dominic?s complete story online at beemorsefarm.wordpress.com. His mother?s goal was for 100 people to read the blog in a month, but she ended up with more than 750 page views in 30 days. The Morses are organizing a ?Light It Up Blue? campaign in Houlton next year. They hope to have at least 10 businesses and 30 homes lit up ?Blue? April 2013 in support of Autism Awareness.

Romney asks US to 'turn the page' on Obama

(AP) ? Lifted by a show of Republican unity that once seemed so distant, Mitt Romney plunged into the presidential campaign's final 67 days focused more than ever on jobs and the economy, and depicting President Barack Obama as a well-meaning but inept man who must be replaced.

"America has been patient," he told the nation. "Americans have supported this president in good faith. But today, the time has come to turn the page."

Obama, who will hold his own convention next week, served notice that he will use his powers of incumbency to make Romney's mission hard. Obama planned to visit a Texas military base exactly two years after declaring the end of the U.S. combat mission in Iraq, the war that haunts the last Republican president. This, as Democrats prepare to gather in Charlotte, N.C., for Obama's convention.

Romney capped a high-energy night closing the Republican National Convention with a spirited and unusually personal speech infused with his family life, touching on his Mormon faith and recounting his youth. The cheers were loud and frequent, surely music to the ears of a candidate who struggled throughout the bruising primary season and beyond to bury doubts among many in his party that he was the authentic conservative in the field.

"Now is the time to restore the promise of America," Romney declared to a nation struggling with unemployment and the slowest economic recovery in decades.

Polls suggest a to-the-wire campaign finish. The two men will spend the next 10 weeks in a handful of competitive states, none more important than Florida and Ohio, and meet in one-on-one debates where the stakes could hardly be any higher.

The campaign themes are mostly set. Romney depicts the president as a once-inspiring but disappointing figure who doesn't understand job-creation or ordinary Americans' frustrations. Democrats portray Romney as a man shifting ever rightward in the absence of core convictions, and a wealthy plutocrat who can't relate to the middle class.

Hanging over the campaign is a big number: the nation's 8.3 percent unemployment rate. It is Obama's biggest impediment to a second term. Republicans seem to be banking on the notion that it will bring Obama down if Romney simply presents himself as a competent alternative.

Strikingly absent from Romney's campaign, including the three-day convention in Tampa, were detailed explanations of how he would tame deficit spending while also cutting taxes and expanding the armed forces. He seems to be asking voters to trust his ability to create jobs and to make tough, unpopular decisions later.

Romney used his biggest moment yet in the spotlight, Thursday's televised acceptance speech, to put a softer glow on his business record and to make short work of a conservative checklist that is now less important as he pursues swing voters.

He briefly hailed "the sanctity of life," but did not mention "abortion," illegal immigration, or even Ronald Reagan by his first name.

Romney's speech also omitted many of the sharp barbs that he and his allies often throw at Obama.

"I wish President Obama had succeeded, because I want America to succeed," Romney said. "But his promises gave way to disappointment and division. ... We deserve better."

He repeated his claim that Obama can't lead America out its economic doldrums because he has no business background.

"Jobs to him are about government," Romney said.

The relatively toned-down rhetoric was a shift from Romney's taunt, only two weeks ago, of "Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago."

Thursday's gentler tone by Romney might simply be a nod to reality. Polls repeatedly find that voters find Obama more likable than Romney. Romney's convention message was: It's OK to like Obama even as you fire him.

Of course other top Republicans, and Romney himself, might revert to ripping into Obama, especially if they don't see polls moving in Romney's direction soon in the 10 or so states up for grabs.

Democrats hope their convention in Charlotte will, at a minimum, neutralize any GOP bounce out of Tampa.

Obama seemed equally willing to avoid bombastic rhetoric for a while. He told Time magazine he hoped his re-election would help end the political stalemate in Washington, much like "popping a blister."

The president also said he wants to do a better job of explaining how his policies will help boost the economy.

Obama planned to campaign this weekend in Ohio, Colorado and Iowa.

Romney planned to campaign Friday in Virginia, Saturday in Ohio and both days in Florida before taking a couple of days to rest while Democrats start their quadrennial show in Charlotte.

Obama narrowly won North Carolina in 2008, and scheduled his 2012 convention there in hopes of repeating the unexpected feat. Romney's path to victory is severely complicated unless he puts the state back in the GOP column.

Like any presidential challenger, Romney must do two things: Make voters willing to oust the incumbent, and make himself an acceptable replacement.

In Thursday's address, Romney seemed to assume Americans have already cleared the first hurdle, weary of high unemployment.

"What America needs is jobs, lots of jobs," Romney said. "To the majority of Americans who now believe that the future will not be better than the past, I can guarantee you this: if Barack Obama is re-elected, you will be right."

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama's visit to Fort Bliss on Friday will highlight administration efforts to support U.S. service members and their families, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those efforts include attempts to combat what Carney called "unseen wounds" of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

Romney avoided the topic of terrorism and wars in Islamic countries, which bedeviled President George W. Bush's final years and helped launch Obama's career. In his big speech Thursday, Romney did not mention Iraq, Afghanistan or terrorism.

Harvey Keitel kicks off French seaside filmfest

The 38th Deauville film festival began on Friday with Harvey Keitel as guest of honour at the seaside resort's annual celebration of American film.

Six first-time filmmakers are among the 15 vying for the festival's Grand Prize to be handed out on September 8 by a jury headed by French actress and director Sandrine Bonnaire.

Oscar-winning Frenchman Michel Gondry is among those in competition with "The We and the I", which follows a bunch of schoolkids on a bus through the Bronx and premiered at the Cannes film festival in June.

Other high-profile contenders at the festival on France's Normandy coast include Benh Zeitlin with his fantastical "Beasts of the Southern Wild" about a cluster of Louisiana towns being swallowed by the encroaching sea, which took the Camera d'Or first film prize in Cannes.

And the festival will pay a special tribute to Keitel, star of such screen classics as Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant" and Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs."

Last year's Grand Prize went to the US auteur Jeff Nichols, whose latest film the Mississippi-set coming-of-age drama "Mud" will show out of competition.
