Taylor Swift Talks 'Toxic' Love And Why She Doesn't Want To 'Wear ...

WENN

By Radar Staff

At 22, Taylor Swift has made millions of dollars off of her failed relationships, and isn?t bashful about sharing her wisdom!

The country singer, who recently added Conor Kennedy to her extensive list of exes that includes John Mayer, Joe Jonas, Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Lautner, delves deeper into the wreckage of her love life in December?s Harpers Bazaar, and RadarOnline.com has the details.

PHOTOS: Taylor Swift And Conor Kennedy Hold Hands At The Beach

"Some combinations of people are toxic, you know?" she says about her less than fortunate romantic history. "You have to find the right one that isn't just going to explode into fiery ash and destruction."

Taylor, who makes all the decisions when it comes to her career, would ideally like to hand over control to a romantic partner in a relationship to relieve some of the pressure.

PHOTOS: Taylor Swift In December?s Cosmo

"It needs to be equal. If I feel too much like I'm wearing the pants, I start to feel uncomfortable and then we break up," she states, referring to relationships as "the ultimate collaboration."

She adds that sometimes "it's wonderful to hand over the reins to your boyfriend when you control so much of these big, high-pressure decisions, you know? That is a huge defining factor in who you choose to be with."

PHOTOS: Taylor Swift Is Morphing Into A Kennedy!

And Taylor, who has admitted that she is a girls-girl, reveals that she and pals such as Selena Gomez and Emma Stone only talk about boys when they are together.

"We never talk about fashion, about career, about our ambitions or our projects," she exclaims. "We just talk about relationships, feelings, love, and boys."

Living With Cancer: It's About Time - NYTimes.com

It?s time to renew my driver?s license! I never thought I would live to see the day. Back in 2008, when pressed to disclose my life expectancy, my oncologist estimated three to five years. Figuring that I was an average patient, I split the difference and believed I had four years left. Yet here I am, about to celebrate my fourth ?cancerversary? with a trip to the dreary and backlogged bureau of motor vehicles, elated by the conviction that even if I expire within the next year or so, my license won?t.

This sort of wacky calculation reflects the oddity of cancer temporality. Every facet of cancer and its treatments transforms time, from its smallest to its larger increments. Of course, waiting takes the most time in the smallest units. Its ticktock can be interminable, especially when you are anxiously waiting for test results or fasting for a dreaded operation or when you are going through preparations for a procedure requiring that you drink vials of what looks like Kool-Aid every half-hour for two hours. Any period spent in the hospital requires killing time. Time, in fact, sometimes seems to stop, to stand still. The afternoon after an operation, as one fitfully wakes and sleeps, sleeps and wakes, can feel like an eternity. I surface with effort, muttering, ?It can?t still be Thursday,? only to be told, ?Yes, it?s still Thursday.?

While you?re waiting, fear or pain elongates minutes and hours and days. Chemotherapy divides into intervals the weeks and months that begin with its slow drip-drip. Just when I determine that I have no time to waste and must relish the change of the seasons, the timetable of chemo-time nudges them aside.

Each of my cycles of chemotherapy included six sessions, given every three weeks. I might not have known whether it was spring or fall, but I always knew that there were, say, two down and four to go. And then I began counting not the sessions but the cycles, though I could not remember the start-and-finish of all three cycles, for the past blurred. I had to draft a sort of chemo-history. Now that I am in a clinical trial, the nurse in charge provides me with a monthly schedule on which all the blood draws, pill dispensations and scans are recorded so I can track the present and the near future. Its rhythms trump those of the Gregorian and lunar calendars.

The zones of remissions and recurrences ? registered for many people in years, for me, unfortunately, in months ? can also be hard to gauge. Do I date remission at the last chemotherapy session, recurrence at the start of the next chemotherapy cycle? Or do I go by blood tests or scans? I am just as uncertain about the exact date of my cancerversary. Is it the day on which I heard the diagnosis, or the day of the initial operation? I wonder, should either of these time bombs be celebrated?

The limits of time stir me to enumerate constantly. I am always counting on my fingers: remissions and recurrences, the months used up, the months left, the relatives and friends I cherish. I count my steps down to the mailbox, my steps dragging the garbage can back to the garage, the number of my husband?s underpants in the laundry, the hours until the next pill, the number of days in which I must change or flush surgical implants, the weeks until I see my oncologist, the people on whom I count.

If my oncologist is right, and all of her other predictions have been spot on, I am approaching the last year of my life: final time. In the immortal words of Dr. Seuss, ?How did it get so late so soon?? Without much of a future, surely time will again change. A lot can happen in a year ? think of the helpless infant becoming a walking, talking toddler in 9 or 10 months. Time moves more slowly for small children, since a year of a 2-year-old?s life is 50 percent of that life. A terminal diagnosis may also slow down time. The next year might be 100 percent of what?s left of my existence.

Sometimes the time left seems too long; too many catastrophes could injure those I love. Sometimes it seems too short; there are so many suspenseful stories unfolding around me, and I want to see how they will turn out. Those for whom time?s chariot is indeed winged often attest to a heightened appreciation of their fast-fading prospects. And then there is always the dream of borrowed time, that numinous period beyond the predicted end, like a stay of execution, which must be fraught with its own blessings and curses.

But during apocalyptic times, when natural forces obliterate the precious places of my origins, even the dream of borrowed time can sink under the rising waters, as I brood on the widespread suffering and struggling of others.

In the meantime, I discover that it is now possible to bypass the motor vehicle bureau by renewing a driver?s license online. Voil?, it will appear in the mail ? sporting the photograph on the license issued six years ago, before my diagnosis. On the license, at least, the passage has been reversed. It?s about time.

CBO: Going over the fiscal cliff is bad, but so is ignoring the national debt

The Congressional Budget Office warns in a report Thursday that allowing tax hikes and spending cuts to occur ? going over the fiscal cliff ? could cause a recession.

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / November 8, 2012

America?s budgetary scorekeepers have published a postelection ?FYI? for the president and Congress, with this blunt message: That ?fiscal cliff? thing is dangerous, but so is the opposite policy of ignoring the national debt.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

?Fiscal cliff? is the nickname for a collection of tax increases and federal spending cuts that are scheduled to take effect at the start of next year.

Economists at the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) warned in a report Thursday that allowing those tax hikes and spending cuts to occur ?will probably cause the economy to fall back into a recession next year.?

But, the CBO report added in the next breath, letting the policy changes take effect would actually ?make the economy stronger later in the decade and beyond.? The reason: The tax hikes and spending cuts would reduce federal deficits, thus avoiding a dangerous surge in federal debt as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP).

What this implies is that there?s a very tricky job ahead for a Democratic president, a Republican-led House, and a Democratic-majority Senate.

The ideal way forward, suggested in the CBO report and in other independent reviews, would be to change the cliff into a gradual slope ? one that avoids recession in the near-term but still leads down a path of deficit reduction. It?s not just a matter of saying, ?Let?s postpone those tax and spending changes.?

Elected officials in both parties have endorsed the general idea of long-term fiscal reform. But the choices are difficult. The new report, titled ?Choices for Deficit Reduction,? makes a big deal of that.

It talks about various options for reducing entitlement benefits, cutting other federal spending, or raising new tax revenue. A mix of those approaches may very well be needed, the CBO implies, because of the magnitude of the mismatch between expected revenues and spending.

The report is both a nudge to action and a partial tool kit for lawmakers as they bargain in the coming days and weeks.

Some overview points from the report and other recent CBO analysis:

? The option of doing nothing isn?t pretty. If policymakers push the economy straight over the cliff on Jan. 1, a recession would probably result, yielding a decline of 0.5 percent in GDP for the calendar year. The unemployment rate would shoot up to 9.1 percent, the CBO predicts.

? The option of fully removing the cliff would result in an economy that grows, but not at a roaring pace. A separate analysis released Thursday by the CBO estimated that keeping Bush-era tax rates in place, nixing the cuts in defense and other spending, and making other changes (including extending payroll-tax relief for workers) would push GDP up to a growth rate of about 2.4 percent.

? But fully removing the cliff adds a lot to the federal deficit. Spending would exceed revenue by an extra $503 billion in 2013. That?s equal to more than 3 percent of a year?s GDP.

? Doing nothing to stem the red ink would have long-term consequences. The CBO outlines negative effects including an impaired ability to respond to unexpected challenges, as well as ?an increase in the likelihood of a fiscal crisis, in which investors would lose confidence in the government?s ability to manage its budget, and the government would thus lose the ability to borrow at affordable interest rates.?

American Suzuki Motor To Cease Selling Cars

BREA, Calif. - American Suzuki Motor Corp. on Monday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and said it will cease selling automobiles in the U.S. as part of a plan to restructure its business.

The company, based in Brea, Calif., is the sole distributor of Suzuki Motor Co. vehicles in the continental U.S.

In documents filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Central District of California, the company estimated that its debts and liabilities range from at least $100 million to as much as $500 million.

It also said it has between 1,000 and 5,000 creditors.

American Suzuki Motor said it has enough cash to operate during the restructuring and intends to honor all car warranties and buyback agreements. It will work with its car dealerships to help them transition into parts-and-service operations. In some cases, the dealerships will be shuttered, it said.

Once it exits bankruptcy protection, American Suzuki Motor said it will focus on selling Suzuki motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and marine outboard engines.

It said that it is exiting the car business because of slow sales, unfavorable foreign exchange rates and high costs due to U.S. regulatory requirements.

It sold 2,023 vehicles in October, which was up 5 percent from the same month last year. Its Grand Vitara sport utility vehicle posted a 64 percent jump in sales last month, although American Suzuki did not say how many of them were sold. In May, the last month it provided a breakdown of its sales, it moved 474 Grand Vitaras, while its biggest seller was its SX4 small crossover, of which 1,101 were sold.

The bankruptcy and reorganization are unrelated to its parent Japan-based Suzuki Motor Corp., which intends to buy the American subsidiary's remaining businesses and automotive service operation.

The reorganized company will retain the American Suzuki Motor name, the company said.

Are health insurance companies ?unproductive?? ? The Reality ...

November 5th, 2012

Brad DeLong claims that health insurance and finance are ?at best, completely unproductive.?

Shifting an extra three percent of GDP into health care administration was a huge mistake. What the extra three percent of people working in health care administration are doing was working for insurance companies trying to find ways not to pay for the treatment of sick people. They are not only not producing anything useful, they simply increase risk and fear?and make people scared that if they do go to the doctor they then will not understand the bill they get and will not be able to pay it.

Well, yes and no. Yes, health insurers try to prevent health-care expenditure. Often this comes at the expense of sick people.

But if the health insurers don?t stand between the health care industries (hospitals, doctors, pharmaceutical companies, medical-equipment vendors, nursing-home operators) and their ambition to consume 110% of GDP, who will? If we don?t want sick people bargaining with their doctors, someone else has to. Whether that ?someone else? works for a public agency or a private insurer, there?s going to be conflict. And it?s not at all obvious that cheaping out on administration, as Medicare and Medicaid do, is actually the best way to run the system.

As Malcolm Sparrow has pointed out, a noticeable fraction ? 5%? 10%? ? of total health-care expenditure is flat-out stolen. Not wasted: stolen, by billing for procedures never performed and equipment never delivered. Getting control of that problem requires spending money on ?health care administration.?

That?s not to say that reducing the paper-shuffling in health care isn?t a social objective: only that it isn?t a simple proposition.

Drugmakers offer to cap Greece's medicines bill

LONDON (Reuters) - International drug companies have offered to cap the total amount the Greek government has to pay for its medicines in a bid to resolve a crisis that is jeopardizing both the supply of drugs to patients and drugmakers' profits.

The proposal was set out by the trade group the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (Efpia) in a letter to the Greek ministers of health and finance, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.

In exchange for a ceiling on outpatient pharmaceutical expenditure of 2.88 billion euros ($3.70 billion) in 2012, Efpia wants the government to commit to pay off all outstanding debts and promise not to allow further arrears to build up.

Under the plan, individual drug companies would be subject to a "clawback" if the cost ceiling is breached, based on their share of the Greek market.

The move follows growing concerns about the situation in Greece, where the government last month took the highly unusual step of suspending all drug exports from the country in an attempt to prevent shortages.

Richard Bergstrom, Efpia's director general, said the industry's offer to Greece reflected a new realism among major drug manufacturers, who have seen sales and profits eroded by steep price cuts and unpaid bills in austerity-hit Europe.

"Setting a growth cap or budget ceiling is not something we have ever liked to do in the past, but in the current environment it is better to do that and have some stability," he said in a telephone interview.

Other pharmaceutical stability agreements have already been agreed in Portugal, Ireland and Belgium, and the model could be extended to other states in future.

"We've suggested this to a number of other governments as an approach to deal with the financial crisis," Bergstrom said.

Both European and U.S.-based drugmakers have been hit by the worsening situation in Europe and executives have highlighted the issue as a drag on profits in recent third-quarter financial reports.

Andrew Witty, the chief executive of Britain's biggest drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline , told reporters last week it was "not reasonable" for governments to think they could continue to squeeze the industry without serious knock-on effects.

In the latest sign of how the crisis is affecting the provision of healthcare services, German pharmaceuticals firm Merck KGaA said on Saturday it was no longer delivering its cancer drug Erbitux to Greek hospitals.

Another German company, Biotest , which makes products from blood plasma, was the first drugmaker to stop shipments to Greece because of unpaid bills in June.

Nigeria security forces kill 13 in raid on kidnappers

YENAGOA, Nigeria (Reuters) - Nigerian security forces have killed 13 members of a gang suspected of abducting a Turkish man in a dawn raid on their hideout in oil-producing Rivers state, police said on Saturday.

A 20 million naira ($127,600) ransom was paid for the release of Bayram Karakus, who worked for the Rivigo Construction company, Rivers police spokesman Ben Ugwuegbulam told Reuters.

He gave no details of what happened to the Turkish man.

"A combined team of operatives ... stormed the militant camp of a notorious gang also responsible for kidnapping, armed robbery, killing of policemen and civilians in the recent past," Ugwuegbulam said.

"In the ensuing gun battle six of the hoodlums were fatally wounded ... seven of the wounded died on the way to hospital."

Ugwuegbulam said the police recovered 98,900 naira, the bags used to deliver the ransom, six AK 47 rifles and ammunition in the raid on Friday.

Kidnapping for ransom is common in the coastal Niger Delta region, which is home to Africa's largest oil industry. The majority of people abducted are Nigerians but foreign oil and construction workers are also targets.

Nigeria is one of the worst countries in the world for kidnapping, a major criminal enterprise worth millions of dollars a year. Abductions are most common in the oil-region and other southern states, including the commercial-hub Lagos.

Piracy off the coast is also on the increase.

Pirates released seven sailors last week - six Russians and an Estonian - seized after an attack on a ship operated by French firm Bourbon SA off the coast of Nigeria.

Suspected jihadis kill 3 police in Egypt's Sinai

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) ? Egyptian security officials say suspected Islamic militants have ambushed police in the northern Sinai Peninsula, killing three.

The gunmen pulled in front of a police vehicle in an unmarked truck in the area's main city of El-Arish, before standing up on the truck bed and opening fire, the officials say. They then raised a black flag associated with jihadis and shouted "God is great."

Intelligence officials who declined to be named in line with regulations say the suspects then sped off.

The head of security in northern Sinai, Ahmed Bakr, confirmed that three policemen were killed in the Saturday attack.

Egyptian security forces have come under attack numerous times by militants in northern Sinai who have exploited the security void in the desert peninsula that borders the Gaza Strip and Israel.

Disease is like holding a handful of water Managing Chronic ...

It has become increasingly necessary to draw a sharp distinction between managing chronic disease and managing health, or health-care versus wellness. In health-care as we know it, excluding injuries by accidents or other causes, the primary focus is two-fold. One, to do what I call quasi prevention by having yearly checkups for general health, i.e. mammograms for women, prostate checks for men, checks for cardiovascular or other abnormalities.

Second, is to respond to diagnosed problems. Problems when found might necessitate surgery, medication, or both, usually targeted at a specific condition. That approach primes you for the next series of problems you will likely encounter.

The human body is not like an automobile, where you replace or repair one part and you?re back on the road again. Eventually another component will fail somewhere down the road. To look at it another way, you can replace enough parts that you essentially have a new automobile. Not so with the body.

Once you receive the bad news of heart disease, diabetes or cancer, for instance, then managing chronic disease kicks in, sentencing you to a bevy of drugs for the rest of your life. At this point they are conceding that the drugs they are prescribing won?t cure you, but sustain you, in most cases, in a steadily declining state of health, while other conditions manifest themselves, for which you?ll be prescribed more drugs. Venture to guess where this is heading?

On the other hand wellness takes a completely different approach. Embracing wellness means taking steps to avoid the devastating circular scenario played out above.

While one approach (wellness) will cost you money along the way, the other can very well cost your health, wealth and your life. The wellness route will prolong or prevent entirely the onset of degenerative diseases, as well as provide a much better quality of life in the process. The holistic nature of wellness treats the entire body nutritionally, as it builds, sustains, and fortifies immunity. This means that you are not waiting for the next diseased shoe to drop, you?re being proactive and therefore more equipped to handle a problem should one arise.

Wellness makes sense on the basis of cost alone. It?s cost is spread out over time, and more financially tolerant. Traditional management of disease will not only exhaust your insurance coverage (if you are lucky enough to have it), but also devastate you financially. This not only effects you personally but also your family. It?s the ultimate attack on the well-being of you, your economy and your loved ones. The only real winner here is the medical establishment and drug companies.

Perhaps the best part of the wellness approach is the sense of confidence you have when you know that you have done all that you know every day to fortify your body against disease. You also can stop looking over your shoulder for fear of the next disease.

Anyone can get sick but how your body is able to respond makes all the difference, and can determine your ability to recover. Practicing wellness not only allows you to survive, but also allows you to thrive.

With all the known problems with the environment, chemicals, food, antibiotics and disease, a good wellness plan will ensure that you are taking steps not only to live, but live happy.

Was Penn State's former president part of a 'conspiracy of silence'? (+video)

Penn State University's former president Graham?Spanier became the highest ranking official charged in the Sandusky sex abuse scandal on Thursday. Two other formerly high-ranking Penn State officials face similar charges.?

The highest-ranking?Pennsylvania State?University?official charged in the explosive case, Spanier, 64, was accused of child endangerment, perjury and criminal conspiracy, all felonies. He also faces misdemeanor counts of failure to report suspected abuse, conspiracy and obstruction of the administration of law.

"This is not a mistake, an oversight or a misjudgment. This was a conspiracy of silence by top officials at Penn State, working to actively conceal the truth, with total disregard to the suffering of children," Attorney General Linda Kelly told a news conference.

Two other officials, Athletic Director?Tim Curley?and retired Vice President?Gary Schultz, also face new charges of child endangerment, criminal conspiracy and obstruction. They were charged in November 2011 with failure to report suspected abuse and perjury, and both have pleaded not guilty.

Sandusky, 68, a former assistant coach in Penn State's powerhouse?football program, was convicted in June of molesting 10 boys over a 15-year period in a scandal that rocked college sports and focused national attention on child sex abuse.

He was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison, effectively a life sentence.

Trustees fired Spanier and revered head football coach?Joe Paterno?in November 2011 in the wake of the charges against Sandusky. Paterno died in January.

Spanier, Curley and Schultz, whose job included heading the university police, are accused of concealing information about suspected abuse involving Sandusky, Kelly said.

The abuse included on-campus incidents in 1998 and 2001 that the three men discussed in detail, she said.

Office file

Kelly said a grand jury issued a subpoena in December 2010 but relevant emails and other evidence were not turned over until April 2012, after the three men had left their jobs.

Schultz kept a file about the 1998 and 2001 incidents involving Sandusky at his campus office and told staff members never to look in the file, Kelly said.

It was removed from the office on the day charges against Sandusky were announced and delivered to Schultz's home.

Is Not-For-Profit Photography Sustainable ? Even For A Good Cause ...

Last time, we discussed giving back with your photography business.

But how can you give free sessions sustainably ? especially when that?s mostly what you want to do?

The answer should be considered by anyone looking to give back with their businesses:

Q:? I?m in the Canadian Navy. My love for photography has gotten me into starting my own company to offer free photography to members of the Canadian Forces and their Families.?

I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how to get people interested. I?ve been using Facebook to get friends and co-workers to Like my page so they can see any updates. However a LOT of people are still uninterested, even friends??? How can I get people more interested in this??

I know you offer a one-on-one, however as this is a non-profit I don?t really have the money to put forward.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

- C.S.

A:? Ah, the unfortunate discovery:? Giving something away for free can be JUST AS HARD as charging money for it.

We?ll get into some psychological reasons for that later on.

First:? Cue wild, happy applause for your motivations.? I imagine that military families are under special kinds of stress that make such photos and tangible memories even more important.? Providing services to them is a wonderful idea, a kind-hearted way to fill a need many may not realize they have.

Because you?re onto such a great thing, let?s make sure that you can do this sustainably.? Meaning ? let?s make sure you don?t get started, provide a few services, and then get burned out or have to give up.? Your mission is noble, and deserves to make it past the first year.

Because I?m sure you want to be doing this longer than a few months, let?s be clear about one thing first:

All nonprofits need to make money.

If you Google ?how to start a nonprofit,? you?ll find that the bulk of the advice is related to how to raise capital or create a business plan.? Every nonprofit leader I?ve ever encountered spends the vast majority of his or her time raising money or dealing with finances.

As this article points out, the very term ?nonprofit? refers to tax status ? not a sustainable operating model.

It takes more than time and a camera to provide photographic services.?

Heavy operating costs are one of the major reasons so many for-profit photography businesses fail.? Costs include:

  • Gas and other vehicle expenses for driving to/from sessions
  • Insurance for your gear (what happens to your nonprofit if your camera is stolen or damaged?)
  • Continuing education on both running your organization and becoming a better photographer
  • Computer and/or software upgrades (how will you back up your photos?? what happens when your computer crashes and you can?t afford a new one?)
  • A lawyer to review your contracts (because you will need contracts, even for free sessions)
  • Website or email list maintenance (relying on Facebook alone can be disastrous for your ability to get your message out there, as algorithm changes continue to reduce your ?free? reach to fans)

In short:

It isn?t a sustainable nonprofit when one grumpy toddler spraying your camera with a hose can shut down your entire enterprise.?

With zero income, the only alternative is to either 1) pay it all yourself, or 2) set up fundraisers, which take up a tremendous amount of time and money in and of themselves.

Self-funding is a risky proposition, since your own personal financial situation will dictate what your nonprofit can and can?t do.? And frankly, asking for people to pay for your gas and gear insurance is probably even harder than getting people to donate to other causes like cancer research.

You mention in your question that you?ve already run into a problem with money:

You said you can?t seem to get people interested in participating, but you can?t afford mentoring with someone who could help you plan out a strategy.? Of course, there may be great free resources in your town or online for people starting nonprofits, and they may or may not provide the specific help you need.? And I?m happy to answer this question on the blog as a donation of my time to your cause.

But at some point, you?ll probably need education, time, or strategic help from someone who isn?t willing to donate their time to your nonprofit.? (They may already be donating to someone else, or they may not be in a position to afford it).

In many unforeseeable cases, you?ll need a stash of capital to help you keep going.

By the way:? This review of nonprofit finances is all by way of encouraging ? not discouraging you.

You want to do good, and you want it to be more than a flash in the pan before your energy is burned away.? You can absolutely do this.? But you?ll need to figure out a way to have a replenish-able reserve of money on hand.

You might already know all this, but it bears repeating.? Because when you have a line of appointments with service families, it would hurt to have to tell them that you dropped your camera and can no longer honor their session times.? Even if you eventually got it repaired, it could damage your reputation and lessen people?s future interest.? Making sure your nonprofit brings in some operating money ensures your ability to give at all.

Okay, on to the strategy.? If I were in your position, here are the six steps I would take to start:

1) People have to know something has value first before they?ll value it.? Create a profitable price list.

Rushing through the airport once, I was approached by someone who handed me a brand new book.? They explained they were trying to get the word out about it, and this was a new marketing campaign idea.? I thanked them and dashed on.

I?m a total bookworm, so you think I would have devoured it.? Especially on the long flight when I had nothing better to do.

But I didn?t.? I glanced at it and tossed it aside.? Matter of fact, I?m pretty sure I left the book on the plane.? A shocking failure in marketing ? they put a book in the hands of a book nut, and the book nut didn?t even crack the cover.

But what if the book had a $23 Barnes and Noble price tag on it?? I would have felt like I hit the jackpot.? I would have understood its value.? I would have felt like I?d gotten away with something.

They had left one critical ingredient in their marketing campaign ? convincing me that the freebie actually had value to me, not just to them.?

What if they had handed me a free laptop?

I would have been immediately interested ? because I know how much a laptop costs.?? I know what its? value is to me.

People need to know what your services are worth.? Even if they?re not paying.

If people don?t know how much your services would normally cost, then to them, you may be indistinguishable from their Aunt Millie with the dSLR she got for Christmas.?

In fact, you might be worse off:? You?re a company giving away something for free, which always arouses suspicions of ?where?s the catch? and ?it must not be that great if they can afford to give it away for free.?

Plus, photoshoots are a pain, and not exactly ?free? either.? Unlike handing someone a free laptop that they can cash in on, giving them a photoshoot means giving them responsibilities.? They have to get dressed up, drive somewhere, get there on time, and behave themselves for an hour.? That is no small undertaking for a family.

But if a coupon-cutting mom knows she?s getting a $2,000 (or whatever) service for free?? She?ll be much more likely to have her kiddo?s hair slicked back, lickety split!

Creating a profitable price list helps people see what they?re really getting.

This is more than a few snaps with Aunt Millie.? This is a professional service that most people would pay big bucks for.? Not only will they appreciate the service more, they?ll also feel more valued themselves.

After all, what you?re saying with your service is that military families make huge sacrifices, and they deserve some extra, wonderful compensation for it ? and you provide it in the form of beautiful images worth $_____.

The process of setting profitable prices also requires you to determine what the hard costs of running your enterprise will be (gas, insurance, etc).? This will help you know how much money you?ll need to contribute or raise to keep your company going.? (More on that in #5.)

Having a price list also avoids setting unhealthy price anchors that can harm the industry.

(If you don?t know what a price anchor is, read this post.)

Someday that military family you?re giving a free session to is going to move somewhere else, and they may want a session with a local photographer there.? If they?re used to getting stuff for free and have no idea what the market value is, they?re going to get mad at that hard-working photographer who is charging $xyz for the same service.? The sticker shock may prevent them from hiring the photographer (depriving them of new, beautiful images), or just make them grumpy and enjoy the process less.

Whatever you do as a photographer, you?re setting expectations that other photographers have to live with.? Be sure people know what the market value for your work is.? It helps you, it helps them, and it helps the industry.

2) If people don?t seem to want what you have to offer, find out what they DO want, and tailor your language accordingly.?

To do this, make a profile of the person or people you?re trying to reach, and figure out what their needs are.? What are they really after?

For example, a military wife might not care about ?free photos.?? Maybe she wants ?A way to keep in touch with family that lasts longer than a Skype call.?? Maybe she wants something precious to send with Daddy when he gets deployed.? Maybe she wants some permanence and predictability in her life, and you can show her how your photos accomplish that.? In other words, don?t talk to her about photos.? Talk to her about the problems she has ? and show her how your photos solve those problems

Essentially, if you can talk to people in a way that shows them that your photography meets needs that they already have, you don?t really have to ?sell? them on the idea.? They?ll come to you.? (For more step-by-step help with this, you might check out the Irresistible Website e-book).

3) Drive demand using non-price strategies.

What gets people out of bed at 2am on Black Friday?? The fact that they?re getting an $800 TV for $400.

Since you are giving something away for free, you can?t use discounting strategies to drive demand.? (And in fact, discounts can be dangerous for service businesses anyway, as discussed here.)

Even if people know how much your service is worth (covered in #1) and why they want it (#2), if you?re always there, then there?s no urgency to get it done.? It becomes just one more ?cool thing I might do someday, when the kids grow out of this hyperactive phase/when I get a haircut/etc.?

To create urgency, you can try one of two things:

Strategy A:? Make the service scarce.

If you?re just always around to do photos, there?s no reason to hurry.? But if you only do 2 sessions a month?? They?d better hustle to grab one before they?re gone!

The mere fact that you?re a limited resource makes your value go up.? You?re not just hanging around waiting for them ? they have to hurry over to YOU.

Strategy B:? Make the free service by invitation only.

When Gmail launched, they were just another free email service.? People could easily have ignored them ? but there was a catch.? Gmail was free, but you had to be invited.?

It was like they were throwing a party with cool free stuff inside, but you had to know someone who knew someone to get in. ?

People love that kind of exclusivity.? They didn?t just get it for free ? they got it for free because they had an ?in.?

Of course, it wasn?t hard to get an invitation.? They weren?t trying to keep people out.? Far from it ? they were trying to get people in!? And they used exclusivity to make it cool.

For every shoot you do, you might try giving them three invitations to give to friends.? When friends ask them who did their photos, they can say it?s by invitation only.? This makes them feel cool because friends will clamor to get the invites, and will make the friends feel cool for ?scoring? something.

The goal of scarcity and exclusivity is NOT to limit your reach or ability to do good.

Your reach is naturally limited ? there?s only so many sessions you can do, anyway.

The goal is to increase value by making people aware that you?re not available all the time, and making them excited to get something that their friends have.? And you can always choose to extend extra invitations, anyway.

4) Set up a reliable way to communicate your message.

Facebook is an awesome tool, and by all means, use the heck out of it.? But it?s inadvisable to build a house with just one tool.

As Jamie over at The Modern Tog explained here, anytime you rely on a third party to help you get your message out, you?re subject to whatever changes they want to make.? Including algorithm changes that dramatically cut your reach to your audience.? I?ve known people who accidentally violated Facebook terms of service and had their page shut down.? If that?s the only way you?ve gathered and communicated with followers, you?ve got a major problem.

Setting up a blog or website will establish a reliable presence where people can see what you?re about.? It gives you a chance to quickly and coherently tell people who you are, who they are, and what you can do for them.

You might also consider an email list to keep in regular contact with people, and so they don?t forget you.? I use AWeber to stay in touch with P4P readers and let them know when something is happening.? (You can even make signing up for your email list exclusive ? make it invitation-only to get on the list to hear about the next round of free sessions.)

5) Decide where an income stream is going to come from.

As discussed above, at some point you will need money to keep things going.? You can decide where it comes from:

You can have each family pay a minimal retainer to cover bare-bones costs.? Having them pay a token fee might actually increase their commitment to the session, discourage rescheduling, and make them feel like they?re getting a great deal (because they?ve seen what the full price would be).? People often value free things far less than things they paid for, even if it?s the same thing.? Not on purpose, and not all the time, but often.? We value what we have to sacrifice for.? Thus, you may find that this option of a small retainer is even better than something that?s totally ?free.?? That possibility is worth investigating.

You could give each family the option to donate something in lieu of a retainer.

You could offer regularly-priced sessions to the general public, and let it be known that the profits go to helping military families get family photos.? You could do twice-a-year mini sessions for the general public and make an event out of it to raise funds for the next six months.

Unless you?re independently wealthy and are okay with bankrolling the entire project, including unforseen extras, not creating cost-covering income makes it much more likely that you won?t be around to serve these families very long.?

However you do it, be clear where the money is coming from.

6) Warning:? Some people can become difficult to deal with when they are getting something for free.? Create a contract and set exact policies.

Just because YOU are doing good doesn?t mean people will always be good in return.

In my decidedly un-scientific sampling of P4P readers, I?ve discovered that the danger in giving free or discounted sessions is that you sometimes attract a segment of people who tend to show up late (or not at all), demand more than you can give, reschedule a thousand times, disrespect your time, and exhaust you with unreasonable requests.

Not everyone behaves like this, but it doesn?t take many sour experiences to turn you away from serving a good cause.? You don?t want it to happen even once!

Having everyone sign a contract is a MUST.? Just because they didn?t pay doesn?t mean they won?t sue you.?

Or sell your work.? Or do something else that?s illegal.? You need to ensure they understand your policies, that they?ve signed a model release, and that they?re committed to showing up at the appointed time.? Contracts are a golden opportunity to set everyone up for a smooth ride.

As we talked about in this popular post, contracts aren?t ?mean? or ?untrustworthy.?? Using a contract (including for friends) simply lets them know that you care enough about their experience to make sure everyone is on the same page at all times.? Otherwise, unhappiness will result.? If not now, eventually.

In your agreement, outline clearly ?1) what they will receive, 2) what they can get if they want to pay extra (e.g. extra retouching beyond what you normally do), and 3) what you cannot provide (e.g. endless free re-shoots).

You can purchase pre-made contracts online and/or hire a lawyer to review/create one for you.? Make sure you?re protected, even as you go about doing good things.

Running a non-profit is not much different from running a business.

To stay around long enough to serve your target audience you have to map out:? Who they are, what they need, how you?ll communicate the value of what you do, how you?ll use non-discounting strategies to attract them, how you?ll communicate regularly with them, how you?re going to cover your costs, and how to keep yourself legally protected.

If you plan that out, you?ll be better-equipped to run any kind of enterprise.? Best of luck to you!? Let us know how it goes.

Miguel Torres: ?It?s not a comeback, it?s a homecoming?

The past 11 months haven't been great for former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres. In December, he was cut from the UFC for making a tasteless joke on Twitter. He was brought back for an April bout with Michael McDonald, and was knocked out in the first round. He was then cut from the UFC again.

Now, he has landed with the World Series of Fighting, the new promotion that will debut on NBC Sports Network this Saturday.

He talks about how he's still in the process of refining his game, going from the crazy and wild fighter WEC fans knew to the controlled, planning fighter he is working to be now. He also says he doesn't see Saturday's bout against Marlon Moraes as a comeback, but a homecoming. When Torres was with the WEC, he fought on Versus, the channel that was turned into NBC Sports.

Though he may say it's not a comeback, this is the kind of opportunity that can help Torres get his career back on track. He's on television again and fighting away from the UFC or WEC for the first time since 2007. It's a shot to remind MMA fans of the kind of fighter he can be.

Will he do it? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
