In passport kerfuffle, Taiwan is stickin' it to China

Taiwan is fighting back with stickers after China issued passports showing ownership over the entire South China Sea.

    By Ralph Jennings,?Correspondent / December 18, 2012

A page from a Chinese passport displays a Chinese map which includes an area in the South China Sea inside a line of dashes representing maritime territory claimed by China, in Kunming, Yunnan province, in this November file photo.

    Reuters/File

China hasn?t started a military war with Taiwan ? as has been feared since the 1940s ? but a battle that began on paper last month has met with a fiery pulp-and-ink response that could burn a hole in goodwill between the two once-hostile governments.

Pictures on Beijing?s latest passports show a map of China that includes two parts of Taiwan, including its scenic showpiece Sun Moon Lake. The travel documents also depict islets in the South China Sea as China's, despite competing claims by Taiwan and several Southeast Asian countries.

China, already a regional heavyweight, is believed to have issued 5 million of the passports between April and November when they inflamed a regional dispute with neighbors. Now Taiwan is joining the chorus of protest, not by refusing to stamp them as Vietnam has announced it is doing, and not by issuing their own maps as India has done, but with some provocative stickers with a message to China. ?

China has claimed Taiwan as part of its turf since the 1940s, when Chiang Kai-shek?s Nationalists set up a government to rival mainland China's about 100 miles offshore after losing the Chinese civil war to Mao Zedong?s Communists. The relationship between China and Taiwan has been up and down for the past few decades: Both?formal reunification with the mainland and full Taiwanese independence have been suggested,?but a tempering of relations has kept many content with the middle ground status quo, with Taiwan considering itself an effectively independent territory.?

Still, the maps in China?s passports were taken as a bold affront to that. In response, Taiwan?s main opposition Democratic Progressive Party gave away 10,000 pink stickers at the foreign ministry consular office in Taipei. The stickers that read ?Taiwan is my Country? can be slapped onto the back cover of a Taiwan passport or onto a plastic passport protector.?

The stickers went fast two weeks ago, so the party copied off another 20,000. ?People just love them,? says its policy coordination executive director Joseph Wu. ?It?s quite clear that what China is doing trespasses into our sovereignty. Taiwan is not under any country?s jurisdiction.?

Across town, the smaller Taiwan Solidarity Union Party printed out oversized paper effigies of the Chinese passports and marred or burned them at a rally, according to local media.

Taiwan and China have set aside differences over sovereignty since 2008, when the island?s conciliatory President Ma Ying-jeou took office. Mr. Ma?s government has signed 18 deals with China, drawing Taiwan closer to the world economic powerhouse. Talks on those agreements built mutual trust that didn?t exist before.

The island?s foreign ministry says?that trust is now being questioned. The ministry?s news release calls China?s passport issue ?a provocative act that will ? damage the mutual trust laboriously built by the two sides in recent years.?

Taiwanese opposition forces are protesting the Chinese passports because they worry that the government is courting China rather than standing up to it, but analysts say officials in Taipei are just as irked as their skeptics.

?Our government thinks that China betrayed common ground, which is that there?s one China but subject to different interpretations,? says Nathan Liu, an associate international affairs professor at Ming Chuan University in Taiwan, citing the basis for talks and deals since 2008.

PFT: Andy Reid wants to coach in 2013

    Mario WilliamsAP

Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (forearm) has increased his practice reps to a normal level.

Dolphins LB Karlos Dansby has never made it to the Pro Bowl, and he says he doesn?t care; ?I?m about breaking records and reaching milestones. I?m about being a legend,? Dansby said.

Bills DE Mario Williams doesn?t think this season was a failure.? (We?d hate to see how bad the Bills would have been if it were.)

The Jets say DT Muhammad Wilkerson has a concussion; he says he doesn?t.

For Browns S Tashaun Gipson, any game that presents an opportunity to ?put[] out some good tape? isn?t a meaningless game.

An email from a fan has inspired the Ravens.

Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict hated being away from home for Christmas, though he understands he has a job to do; ?The worst part of it was when I called home and my mom said, ?The family?s all here and we?re eating gumbo,? ? Burfict said. ?Man, I wished I was there.? But I?ve got duties to take care of.? Family is always going to be there.?

Steelers TE Heath Miller ended the season with both a serious knee injury and the team?s MVP award.

Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray doesn?t think his unit quit during a 55-7 loss to the Packers.? (We?d hate to see how bad the score would have been if they had.)

Jaguars defensive line coach Joe Cullen turned down an offer to become the defensive coordinator at Boston College.? (Apparently, there isn?t a Wendy?s on campus.)

Here?s a look at the Colts? seven comeback wins in 2012.

With two sacks needed to tie Michael Strahan?s record, Texans DE J.J. Watt surely wishes he was facing Brett Favre this weekend.

Chargers S Eric Weddle didn?t make it to the Pro Bowl, but he has been named the team?s MVP.

Defensive back Brandian Ross is one of the most versatile players on the Raiders? roster.

Four teams in NFL history have won 10 or more games in a row by seven or more points each, and Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has been on two of them.

Despite rumors linking Tony Dungy to the Chiefs, Dungy say he won?t be coaching ?there or anywhere else.?

Giants WR Victor Cruz says repeating as Super Bowl champions is tougher than it looks.

An absence of impact players drafted in rounds one or two could be the biggest factor in the demise of Eagles coach Andy Reid.

Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray isn?t thinking about his fumbles; ?Doesn?t bother me at all,? Murray said. ?Last week was last week. Two weeks was two weeks ago. I don?t worry about mistakes. . . .? I have a short term memory, good, bad, negative, positive, I just move on.?

Six straight wins and the cusp of a division title is earning praise for Redskins coach Mike Shanahan.

Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham says his biggest disappointment this season is the failure of the team to generate turnovers.

Vikings DE Brian Robison realizes the difficulty of rushing the passer with a bad shoulder; ?Every freaking movement is with your shoulder,? he said.

Now that the Bears? defense has found the end zone again, they hope to visit again on Sunday.

Whether Packers WR Randall Cobb plays and what he does if he plays will be determined on Sunday.

Panthers WR Brandon LaFell may be on track to becoming the team?s new Steve Smith.

Falcons WR Roddy White is finally getting noticed for his ability to play through injury.

Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman says that the team?s offense has been trying to do too much.

Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, Jr. isn?t thinking about the possibility of being pursued elsewhere.

The Seahawks last failed to score in the red zone in Week Nine, when they took a knee at the nine to end a win over the Vikings.

The Rams? three leading receivers are within two yards of each other.

A doctor who hasn?t examined or treated 49ers DL Justin Smith believes he will need 12 weeks to recover from his torn triceps.

Cardinals P Dave Zastudil is trying to hang on to the single-season record for punts downed inside the 20.

    Cassini orbiter captures Saturn's swirls

    NASA / JPL-Caltech / SSI

Saturn's storm systems swirl in a near-infrared image captured by the Cassini orbiter's camera system on Dec. 24, from a distance of 441,028 miles (709,766 kilometers).

    By Alan Boyle

The storms of Saturn ripple through the frame of a black-and-white close-up captured by the Cassini orbiter on Christmas Eve and received on Earth on Wednesday.

"Close-up" is a relative term: When this picture was taken, Cassini was 441,028 miles (709,766 kilometers) away from Saturn, or almost twice the distance between Earth and the moon. Also, "black-and-white" doesn't tell the whole story: The picture was captured through the wide-angle camera's CB2 red filter, which brings out more of the variations in the cloud tops of the planet's atmosphere. For an even more dramatic illustration of the effect, compare the photos accompanying this report about Saturn's north polar vortex.

So what's black and white and red all over? This picture answers the riddle.

For more pictures from Cassini, including a top-10 photo slideshow?and?raw imagery from last weekend's flyby of the Saturnian moon Rhea, check out NASA's Cassini website as well as the online home base for the CICLOPS imaging team. You can also click through these additional stunners from the Cassini mission:

Update for 9:50 p.m. ET: I originally wrote that the CB2 filter was an infrared filter, but NASA says it's just on the edge of the visible-light spectrum, going into the near-infrared, at a wavelength of 751 nm. Good: That makes the riddle even more apt.

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (AP) ? During stressful times as a combat medic in Afghanistan, Mason Sullivan found solace in Vivaldi. New Jersey native Nairobi Cruz was comforted by country music, a genre she had never heard before joining the Army. For Jose Mercedes, it was an eclectic iPod mix that helped him cope with losing an arm during a tour of duty in Iraq.

These three young veterans all say music played a crucial role in alleviating the stresses of active duty. Now, all three are enrolled in a program that hopes to use music to ease their reintegration into civilian life.

"It's a therapy session without the 'sit down, lay down, and write notes,'" Mercedes, 26, of Union City, said of the music program. "It's different ? it's an alternative that's way better."

The pilot program, called Voices of Valor, has veterans work as a group to synthesize their experiences into musical lyrics. Guided by musicians and a psychology mentor, they write and record a song, and then hold a CD release party. The program is currently under way at Montclair State University, where students participate through the school's veteran affairs program.

Developed by husband and wife team Rena Fruchter and Brian Dallow, it is open to veterans of any age and background. No musical experience is required.

Both accomplished musicians, Fruchter and Dallow created the program as part of Music for All Seasons, an organization they founded which runs musical programs for audiences at places ranging from nursing homes to prisons.

Based on their experiences working with children at shelters for victims of domestic violence, Fruchter and Dallow realized that young people too traumatized to talk about what they had been through were nevertheless willing to bang on an instrument or sing ? often leading to communication breakthroughs. They felt the same might be true for veterans, or other populations traditionally averse to more overt forms of 'talk therapy.'

"We've had situations in which veterans have been carrying their burdens deep inside for such a long time, and they come into this group and they begin to talk about things that they've never talked about before," Fruchter said. "They really open up, and it translates into some music that is really amazing and incredible and powerful."

During a recent session of the eight-week program in Montclair, music facilitators Jennifer Lampert, a former Miss USO, and Julio Fernandez, a musician and member of the band Spyro Gyra, lead a small group of young veterans in brainstorming about their experiences.

"Tired of being angry," ''Easier not to move on," ''The war at home," were phrases Lampert extracted from a discussion among the participants and she wrote each phrase in marker on large notepads fastened to a classroom blackboard. As they spoke, Fernandez strummed an acoustic guitar while Lampert sang some of the phrases the students had come up with, adjusting the beat and tempo at their suggestion. Suddenly, a musical lyric emerged: "Sometimes, I wish the past is where I stayed."

A few weeks later, the group gathered at a sound studio in Union City, where they donned headphones and clearly relished the opportunity to record their collectively written tune, "Freedom," in a professional studio.

"To see music heal people in that way, it's beautiful, and the real incredible part is you don't have to do anything but give in to the music," Lampert said. She recounted how, time and again, the facilitators of the program had watched some participants start the class with shoulders slumped, hesitant to make eye contact, and afraid to speak up. Through the process of writing music they changed, she said, into group-focused, smiling, active participants unafraid to stand up and belt out a tune.

Welcome to the Mouse House: Organizing: Craft Supplies for Kids

I am back with some more organization tips and photos!

So far, I have shown how we organize toys?and how we organize our bookbag/school area. ?Now it is time to share how we store all those craft supplies the kids use!

If your kids are anything like mine, they love coloring and cutting and gluing?. generally anything messy and crafty! ?I love it too, but only if everything is within easy reach and kept organized.

We store all the kids' craft supplies in the lower cabinets of a hutch in the breakfast area.

Cabinet on the left houses paints, brushes, paper, a jar of scissors and glue sticks, and a large bin for "crafty fun" like glitter, pom poms, beads, rhinestones, and do-dads. ?

The middle cabinet holds stamps, ink pads, stickers, and even more "crafty goodness" like pipe cleaners, styrofoam balls, popsicle sticks, and molds for clay.

Finally, the cabinet to the right has lots of construction paper, crayons, colored pencils, markers, and chalk. ?This is also where we store all the activity books, coloring books, and workbooks.

To keep everything organized, I make sure to regularly purge and restock any items that need to be replaced ?(dried out markers, broken crayons, empty sticker packs, etc). ? The kids have also been taught where each item belongs, which definitely helps during clean up time!

And just because people have previously asked to see what I keep in the hutch up top?.

How do you organize your craft supplies? ?(Either your kids' or your own) ?I am always looking for new and interesting ideas!

Chevron's CEO: Affordable energy is crucial

NEW YORK (AP) ? Chevron CEO John Watson notices something important as he visits his company's operations around the globe: Governments everywhere find high energy prices much scarier than the threat of global warming.

And that means the world will need a lot more oil and gas in the years to come.

To meet that demand, Chevron is in the midst of an enormous cycle of investment aimed at extracting oil and gas from wherever it hides in the earth's crust.

Chevron Corp., based in San Ramon, Calif., is the second largest investor-owned oil and gas company in the world, and the third largest American company of any type as measured by revenue and profit. Over the last year, Chevron has earned $24 billion on revenue of $231 billion.

Every day, the company produces the equivalent of 2.7 million barrels of oil and gas, mostly outside the U.S.

Next year Chevron will invest $33 billion ? more than it ever has ? to drill wells, erect platforms, build refineries and scan for undiscovered deposits of oil and gas. Among its biggest projects: A natural gas operation in Australia that will ultimately cost Chevron and its partners $65 billion to build. Also planned are three deep-water drilling and production projects in the Gulf of Mexico that will cost $16 billion.

Watson, a 55-year-old California native and Chevron lifer, joined the company in 1980 as a financial analyst. Before becoming CEO in 2010 he was vice chairman in charge of strategic planning, business development and mergers and acquisitions. He also ran the company's international exploration and production business, led the company's integration with Texaco and was CFO.

Watson has helped shape Chevron into the best performing major oil company in the world by several financial benchmarks, including the profit it makes for each barrel of oil it sells.

In an interview at The Associated Press headquarters in New York, Watson discussed world energy dynamics, U.S. energy policy, hydraulic fracturing, and working abroad. Below are excerpts, edited for length and clarity.

AP: Why do people and politicians dislike big oil companies that deliver the energy they rely on and benefit from?

WATSON: They don't feel like they have the choices. Most products that you consume every day, you have a choice. In energy you have less choice. And as costs rise, it hits the family budget. It's a convenience that we like, but we'd rather pay less for it.

AP: Is there anything you can do about that?

WATSON: Invest in good projects around the world. Every drop of oil that we produce anywhere in the world hits world markets and, other things being equal, brings prices down.

AP: What do you think is the biggest misunderstanding about your company or your industry?

WATSON: Just how much we invest in the business and the risks that we take to deliver the oil and gas that we all expect every day. We literally go to the ends of the earth to bring this energy to consumers.

AP: Can the industry continue to produce oil and gas at a price that can keep the world economy growing?

WATSON: I think so. We want to produce at a price our customers can afford, and I think there's ample resource to do that for the foreseeable future.

AP: Energy companies complain that the U.S. is over-regulated, but at the same time they are expanding here and cite its many advantages. Which is it? Is the U.S. a terrible place to do business, or is it terrific?

WATSON: On balance it's a good place to do business. We always have to be aware of what other governments are doing, and we have to be sure that we stay competitive. When I met with the president with some of my colleagues a couple weeks ago, that was the first thing that people talked about. It wasn't about taxes per se, it was about staying competitive.

AP: People on all sides of the energy debate have long complained about the lack of a comprehensive energy policy in the U.S. Are we wishing for something that just can't happen in this country? And if not, what would it look like to you?

WATSON: Historically the United States has had a wonderful energy policy. We're blessed with a diversity of resources. We have oil. We have gas. We have coal. We have nuclear. And renewables. And as a result, one of our biggest competitive advantages has been affordable energy. You need a strong economy and you need affordable energy to fuel that economy.

AP: Do fossil fuel producers bear the responsibility for curbing greenhouse gas emissions?

WATSON: We have the responsibility to deliver our energy in an environmentally sound fashion. The greatest advancements in living standards in recorded history have taken place in the modern hydrocarbon era. I don't think that's coincidental. Our leaders have to make a decision. Do they want that to continue or do they have a better solution for us? So it's not my call.

AP: How should society go about reducing greenhouse gas emissions?

WATSON: If you look around the world, the countries with the best environmental practices are the wealthiest. There's a reason for that. If you're worried about where your next meal is going to come from or shelter over your head, your focus is on those things.

AP: The U.S. is a wealthy country, how should we reduce emissions?

WATSON: Well, we are a wealthy country. On the other hand, the economy is growing slowly. We have high unemployment. I think that's part of the reason why the president said now is not the time for a carbon tax, because he recognized that that would put pressure on the economy and put pressure on our energy prices, put pressure on manufacturing business, put pressure on consumers.

AP: When it's time to address the carbon issue, how should we do it?

WATSON: It's very difficult for the United States to go it alone. Watch what (other) governments do. The day-to-day decisions being made (show) that concern about climate change is less than other concerns that they have. China is racing by the U.S. in greenhouse gas emissions. Germany is shutting down their nuclear power, the only energy source with zero carbon emissions that can be produced at scale. Japan, much the same way. Governments around the world are making the choice that the benefits of lifting people out of squalor are very important. And affordable energy is the way to get there. And that currently comes through oil, gas and coal.

That doesn't mean there's nothing we can do. First, we can do a lot more on energy efficiency in this country. There are a number of promising technologies to deliver lower carbon fuels. I would support (government funding) of pre-commercial activity to try to advance some of these breakthrough technologies, rather than putting big subsidies on technologies that we know are more expensive and won't necessarily solve the issue.

AP: Will fracking be curtailed in this country?

WATSON: I see very little obstacle to it, notwithstanding all the rhetoric. Now it's being done in some different areas. People aren't used to it, and there have been legitimate concerns expressed, like truck traffic at a simple level, but also concerns about water supplies. They're understandable anxieties. And so we have to work through those with the governments. I think in due course we'll do that because they'll see the advantages to it.

AP: Will natural gas become a bigger part of the energy mix?

WATSON: Natural gas will displace coal in power generation. Getting natural gas into the transportation fleet is harder. It works best for vehicles that work from centralized fueling facilities like trucking fleets or buses and cabs. That is happening. Before it can make big inroads beyond that, infrastructure is going to need to be developed. It will take some time.

AP: A recent factory fire in Bangladesh killed more a hundred people, shining a spotlight on the connections between Western companies and overseas suppliers. What is the responsibility of a company like yours when you go into a developing area?

WATSON: We have global standards for how we operate. And it's our responsibility to operate to those high standards everywhere. We use local labor in almost all cases and we spend an enormous amount of time training people. We provide half the natural gas in Bangladesh. I've been there a number of times. If you go to a construction site, you won't see hard hats. You won't see shoes in many cases. And so we teach people safety standards.

DUSTY the cat can thank complete strangers for giving him another chance at life.

The one-year-old cat was facing a dire situation after being diagnosed with internal injuries and a hernia.

Dusty's owner Lorraine Lavers unfortunately couldn't afford to fund the pricey surgery.

The Wyreema mum said she faced an awful decision.

"There were only a few options left for him," she said.

"One was to find someone to pay for the operation and become Dusty's owner in return, or get the RSPCA to fix him and rehome him, but that would have been very unlikely because of the high level of cats already in shelters.

"So the other option would have been to have him put to sleep."

Mrs Lavers posted details about Dusty's predicament on Facebook, in the hope someone could take in the injured cat.

Instead, Mrs Lavers received messages of support and donations to fund Dusty's surgery.

"It was very unexpected," she said. "I didn't ask for the money. They raised over $450 in less than 24 hours."

Mrs Lavers thanked the administrators of the Facebook page, Toowoomba Buy Sell Swap and Giveaway, for co-ordinating the donations as well as all the people who donated.

"Nothing like this has ever happened to me before," she said.

"They have helped Dusty stay with us."

Dusty underwent surgery last Friday to repair the hernia and internal damage.

He is now receiving antibiotics and lots of healing cuddles from Mrs Lavers' daughter, Kate.

Is it unethical if a realtor is going thru a short ... - Zillow Real Estate ...

What would be the difference if a Realtor sold their property in a short sale or a regular sale? Nothing. The real estate agent must disclose the fact they have a license, that's all that is required. You should have your own agent working for you so what is the problem???????

HTC One S global models finally gorging on Jelly Bean 411

HTC One S owners are seeing the light at the end of the Jelly Bean tunnel, as Android 4.1.1 is now being pushed out to the global models. The company originally promised it way back in July, with rumblings about an October arrival as well, but up until now there's been no joy. HTC One X global owners started to see that Jelly Bean release last month, and we can confirm that it's now come to our very own HTC One S handset too, as the image above proves. XDA Developers also caught wind of a direct HTC link, which will finally bring the extra fluidity of Google's butter to the mid-range handset. There's no word yet about US carrier-flavored versions, but it wouldn't hurt to check your own handset, or XDA's CID list at the MC link below.

Discipline OK even if employee has complained ? Business ...

Courts are consistently hesitant to second-guess well-founded employment decisions. Of course, they won?t let you get away with discriminating or retaliating against an employee for filing an EEOC complaint or lawsuit. But that doesn?t mean you can?t discipline an employee if she needs prodding to meet your legitimate expectations.

You can and should discipline everyone who deserves it, whether she?s involved in litigation or not.

Recent case: Raquel worked for the U.S. Department of Justice. On an evaluation, she received a lower ranking than she had on earlier appraisals, which had rated her ?outstanding.? Her supervisor said the downgrade was because she made slow progress on a big project. She filed a discrimination complaint.

Two years later, she was suspended for five days. Her supervisor said she was punished for missing work for two days without letting her supervisors know and then refusing to submit medical paperwork when she claimed she had been ill.

Raquel sued, alleging discrimination and retaliation for her earlier complaint.

The court tossed out her case. It reasoned that Raquel?s lower evaluation wasn?t enough to justify a lawsuit, since she hadn?t lost pay, benefits or anything else important. Plus, it was clear that there was a legitimate reason for her downgrade from ?outstanding??she had missed important deadlines.

Finally, the court said too much time had passed for the suspension to be retaliation for her earlier complaint. In addition, the suspension was clearly based on her own misconduct. (Allard v. Holder, No. 11-50481, 5th Cir., 2012)

Final note: As long as you treat all employees alike when it comes to discipline, you have little to fear. The employers that get in trouble are those that target or ?throw the book? at employees they?re seeking to get rid of for reasons that aren?t legitimate?or legal.

Google vs. Microsoft: Santa-tracking systems go out of sync

    12 hrs.

Not even Santa Claus can avoid getting drawn into the tech clash between Google and Microsoft: The two companies have set up separate online systems to track where the Jolly Old Elf has been on Christmas Eve?? but they show him simultaneously at widely separated locations, delivering presents at a dramatically different rate.

On the official "NORAD Tracks Santa" website, powered this year by Microsoft, Santa Claus was in Rome, well past the 3-billion-present mark in his holiday rounds. At the same time, Google's Santa Tracker showed him buzzing through Agadez in the African country of Niger, not quite up to the 1-billion-present mark.

They can't both be right. Can they? Here's the word from Search?Engine?Land's Danny Sullivan, who has been tracking the discrepancy in this year's?Santa-tracking software:

"NORAD explains that it uses everything from radar to jets to track Santa. Google doesn?t explain its technology, but I suspect it tries to triangulate Santa using his cell phone signal or use of wifi hotspots.

"As for why NORAD shows Father Christmas delivering three?times the number of gifts that Google is listing, perhaps NORAD?s radars can better pinpoint presents while Google might be doing estimating.?Meanwhile? both services sometimes show presents being delivered over oceans! And why is NORAD showing Santa arriving in some places at 9pm rather than midnight, as has been the case in the past?"

Maybe this is just the sort of thing that happens when you switch software: NORAD (also known as the North American Aerospace Defense Command) has been monitoring Santa's flight as a public service since 1955, and five years ago, it teamed up with Google to keep up with the crush of Web traffic. This year, however, the NORAD Santa operation parted ways with Google and partnered with Microsoft instead.

Google stayed in the Santa game by setting up its own tracking system for "Santa's Dashboard" and Google Maps?? a system that doesn't make use of NORAD's tracking data.

Today, Canadian Maj. Gen. Andre Viens, a spokesman for NORAD, declined to intervene in the Santa-tracking war.

"It's not affecting our tracking," Viens told MSNBC. "We're not in competition with anyone. Our role, and we've been doing that for more than?50 years, is to track Santa and make sure that he has a safe and secure journey throughout the world, and throughout North America in particular."

Maybe it shouldn't be surprising to find?that it's so difficult to get a firm fix on Santa's position, considering how many presents he has to deliver in so little time. Some experts have speculated that the only way Santa could ?deliver gifts (or lumps of coal) to billions of homes in the course of just a few hours would be if he somehow harnessed quantum teleportation. And once you accept that, it's not that big of a leap to detect Santa in two places at once.

Alan Boyle is the science editor for NBC News Digital, and has been tracking NORAD's Santa tracker since 1998.?Boyle's usual online?hangout is over at Cosmic Log.
