Last month I did a review of the Zomm Wireless Leash Plus, a dongle that works with your iPhone and Bluetooth to find your keys or whatever else you happen to attach the dongle to. Recently, a BiKN (pronounced "beacon") iPhone case and tag showed up at my door from Treehouse Labs. BiKN works similarly to the Zomm, but has a few features that make it a vastly superior solution.
While the Zomm leash is useful, I found the use of the iPhone's Bluetooth to be somewhat of a drain on the battery. The BiKN resolves this issue by providing an external battery pack and built-in electronics. There's a micro-USB cable that is used to charge both the case / battery pack and the included BiKN tags. The tags just need to be charged every few weeks, and I found it convenient to just plug in the BiKN case every night to "top off" the iPhone and BiKN batteries. The iPhone is charged up first, and then the BiKN battery pack is charged. The BiKN battery pack cannot be used to power your iPhone, so it's not a substitute for an external battery pack like a Mophie Juice Pack.
The system is meant to be colorful, although my review setup was strictly black and white. When purchasing a BiKN system, you start by choosing the base color of black or white. Next, you select one of six different highlight colors (that was the white on my case). Then you select the base color for your tags (black or white), and finally pick a color for the highlight on the tag -- that's the part that has the loop you use to connect the tag to a keychain, a dog collar, your child's belt, or whatever else you need to find.
A starter kit with the case and one tag currently costs US$99.99 (regularly $104.98), while a kit with two tags runs $119.99 (regularly $129.97). Extra tags cost $49.99 for two. What's fascinating is that tags can be used to find other tags, and your "network" of BiKN tags and cases can have up to 8 devices. BiKN says that an app upgrade coming soon will increase that number to 254 tags.
Once everything is nicely charged up and the free myBiKN app has been installed on your phone(s), it's time to start having fun. If you've purchased more than one case, it's possible to "join" those cases so that if one person in your household loses track of their iPhone, you can find it with the other. For the tags, you pretty much do the same pairing, but can also give the tag a name and a picture to identify it. I chose to name my tag "backpack" and there's a nice drawing of a backpack included in the app. Had I wanted to, I could have taken a photo of the item connected to the tag.
One thing I liked about the BiKN system is that it kept me up to date on the battery status of the case and tag. When a tag is getting low on charge, you're warned to plug it in soon.
For any of the tags or cases, you have three options: page, leash, and find. Tapping the page button for any selected tags and cases makes the tag or case play a sprightly tune that should help locate the device. If you have a tag but have misplaced your phone, there's a button on the tag that you can push to page the case or any other tags -- pretty handy to get everyone in your family at an outdoor picnic to come to your table to eat.
Leashing is the process of creating a geofence for an item you don't want to misplace. Let's say that I want to make sure that my dog doesn't wander too far away from me or dig its way out of the back yard. I can clip the BiKN tag to the dog's collar, then set up the sensitivity of the myBiKN leashing function. If it's set to "far", the leash can be as long as 50 to 100 feet inside or up to 500 feet outside.
Find is a really cool function. The Zomm leash didn't have a way to tell you how far away you were from the tag or which direction to go -- the BiKN find function gives you an estimate of the distance and really whether you're "hot or cold" in terms of finding the item.
Between the Zomm Wireless Leash Plus and the BiKN, the latter is certainly much more convenient, versatile, and easy to use. The tags are much smaller and less obtrusive, and the two-way capability -- being able to find a phone or another tag with a tag -- is brilliant.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A federal judge in New York on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit from investors who alleged top executives of Transocean Ltd. misled shareholders about safety problems in the months leading up to a catastrophic oil well blowout in the Gulf of Mexico.
On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald threw out a class-action suit against Transocean. The Swiss company leased the Deepwater Horizon rig to BP PLC to drill a deep-sea well off the Louisiana coast. The well blew out in April 2010, killing 11 workers, destroying the rig and causing the nation's worst offshore oil disaster.
Buchwald ruled Transocean did not mislead investors about problems with blowout preventers, human errors and equipment problems. Investors alleged company CEO Steven Newman concealed information about safety problems with Transocean's fleet of drilling rigs. The suit also named former CEO Robert Long as a defendant.
The judge said it was "difficult to discern" from the plaintiffs' lawsuit which "specific misrepresentations or omissions" the suit intended to bring under securities laws. The lead plaintiff was Danica Pension, a European pension fund based in Denmark. The lead lawyer for the plaintiffs did not immediately return messages seeking comment on Tuesday.
Transocean said in a statement that it was pleased with the ruling.
The plaintiffs focused on comments Newman made at three investor conference calls between August 2009 and July 2010.
In a conference call on Aug. 5, 2009, Newman told investors "a couple of human error incidents on drill floors" and a "handful of BOP (blowout preventer) problems" were anomalies that were not systemic. He said the problems were being taken care of "so they don't happen again." Newman was speaking of issues Transocean faced in the second quarter of 2009.
Newman again assured investors on Feb. 24, 2010, that the company was taking care of a few problems with equipment failures and human error.
The plaintiffs alleged that Transocean "was suffering from company-wide failures in safety and preventative maintenance" when Newman made these statements, the ruling said.
The plaintiffs charged that Newman again misled investors during a May 28, 2010 conference call when he said the Deepwater Horizon's blowout preventer was tested every week and was shown to be working properly shortly before the April blowout. Also, Newman told investors that the rig's safety equipment was working properly.
But the plaintiffs alleged that Newman's statements were misleading because the blowout preventer was tested at pressure levels lower than what it would be expected to operate in if there was a blowout. Buchwald said those tests were approved by federal offshore regulators ? the Minerals Management Service ? and that Newman had no obligation to "second-guess" regulators.
The judge ruled that Transocean disclosed safety concerns "to the market at various points in time." Buchwald noted that in April 2009, the company did not give executives safety-related bonuses due to two offshore deaths in 2008 and reported in the Beacon, its corporate magazine, in the fall of 2009 that it had hired Lloyd's Register "to conduct a major global evaluation" of safety processes and culture, the ruling said.
"The announcement of a third-party audit of the company's safety practices undercuts any notion that there was 'an intent to deceive' the market," Buchwald wrote.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - RUSAL, the world's top aluminum maker, posted a 92 percent fall in yearly net profit, hit by a write-down in the value of its stake in miner Norilsk Nickel as it grapples with a damaging boardroom row between two Russian billionaires.
RUSAL said fourth-quarter earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, stripping out Norilsk, fell 46 percent to $382 million, while its full year earnings were down slightly, both in line with expectations in a Reuters poll.
It forecast near-term pressure on aluminum prices, which fell sharply in late 2011, due to global volatility and excessive stock, but expected growth in developing countries to keep demand robust through 2012.
"We continue to believe that RUSAL is well-placed in the global aluminum industry?due to its low-cost position. Hence it should be able to sustain better operating performance relative to its peers," RBS analyst Jeannette Sim said in a research report after the results were released.
"However, the boardroom disputes which have resulted in the resignation of its chairman are uncertainties that could weigh on the share price performance," she added.
RUSAL's shares added 1.4 percent in Hong Kong after tumbling 14 percent last week as its former chairman and Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg said the company was in "deep crisis".
The company on Sunday threatened to sue Vekselberg, saying his comments had damaged its reputation and shareholder value, and named Hong Kong Mercantile Exchange chairman Barry Cheung as its new chairman.
Vekselberg, who with a partner holds a 15.8 percent stake in the firm, quit as chairman last week in a row over strategy with Oleg Deripaska, the main shareholder and another Russian billionaire.
The boardroom row has highlighted a bitter dispute over how to relieve the company of an $11 billion debt burden inherited from its $14 billion purchase of a quarter of Norilsk Nickel at the top of the market in 2008. Vekselberg wants to sell the stake back to Norilsk but has been consistently overruled by Deripaska.
However, RUSAL faces no significant principal debt repayments until 2016, and analysts believe Deripaska, who holds a 47.4 percent stake in the company, is unlikely to part with the Norilsk stake.
"We do not have any scheduled repayments in 2012," Deputy CEO Oleg Mukhamedshin said in a conference call after the company's results. "The company is comfortable with existing debt requirements."
The company's priority was to continue reducing debt, but it was not currently considering a refinancing, Mukhamedshin said.
RUSAL, also listed in Paris, posted a net profit of $237 million for 2011 against $2.87 billion a year earlier, lagging an average forecast of $1.91 billion from 22 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
RUSAL said its adjusted net profit, which it described as the major indicator of its core business, rose 25 percent to $987 million from $792 million in 2010 due to lower debt costs.
Its aluminum output edged up one percent to 4.12 million metric tonnes (4.54 million tons) in 2011 and output of alumina, the key material for the production of the lightweight metal, rose 4 percent to 8.15 million metric tonnes.
RUSAL's shares, correlated to the aluminum price, are trading around half their 2010 Hong Kong IPO price of HK$10.80 in January 2010. The Hang Seng Index <.hsi> was up 6.1 percent in the same period.
Many high cost producers suffered losses in the last quarter of 2011 as increasing uncertainties in the global economy depressed demand while production continued to be in surplus.
RUSAL's competitor in China, Aluminum Corp of China Ltd (Chalco) , on Friday posted a bigger-than-expected quarterly net loss of 729.6 million yuan ($115 million)and warned of losses in the first quarter of 2012.

India said Friday it will change a law to allow it to tax foreign firms for acquisitions of assets in the country after it lost a $2.2-billion fight with British mobile phone giant Vodafone.
Tax lawyers said the planned move would revive uncertainty about India's investment regulatory climate.
In January, the Supreme Court dismissed a 112.2-billion-rupee ($2.24-billion) tax bill imposed on Vodafone over the firm's $10.7-billion takeover of Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa's Indian cellular subsidiary in 2007.
The planned change to the 1961 Income Tax Act would be retroactive to April 1, 1962, according to documents presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in parliament when unveiling the 2012-13 national budget.
Under the change, resident and non-resident companies alike would be required to deduct tax and pay it to the Indian government if a merger transaction involved an Indian asset even if the deal was carried out on foreign soil.
"The new amendment is only a clarification reiterating the point that such transactions are to be taxed in India," the top bureaucrat in the Indian finance ministry, finance secretary R.S Gujral, told India's NDTV channel.
The proposed changes state any firm incorporated outside India shall be deemed to be located in the country if its value comes mainly from assets in India.
Indian tax officials had contended Vodafone should have withheld the amount the seller, Hutchison, would owe in capital gains tax when it bought the Indian mobile unit.
However, Vodafone, the world's largest mobile operator by subscribers, argued that it was exempt from paying any tax because the deal took place in the Cayman Islands and both buyer and seller were foreign.
Vodafone also noted it was the purchaser and made no gain on the deal.
The government had said earlier in the week many cases similar to the Vodafone transaction were pending before Indian tribunals.
Tax lawyers said the proposed amendment could allow the government to reopen its tax case against Vodafone. Vodafone said it could not immediately comment on the government's announcement.

We?ve been talking about construction for the past few weeks. Our first blog of this series offered steps involved in building and the importance of hiring a qualified commercial real estate professional to aid in the process. Last week, we discussed the pre-approval and entitlement process.
Now we have a chance to look at a ?build in progress.? Today?s blog features an interview with a builder who is managing a construction project in Harrisburg. Next week, we?ll talk with the owner about the same property in order to gain perspective from both sides.
Below is an interview with David Martin of Michael L. Martin, Inc.
What percentage of home building, commercial building and renovation makes up your business?
Currently renovation/remodeling/additions make up 75 percent of our business; the other 25 percent is commercial.
What makes Michael Martin Builders different than other builders?

How have the economic conditions affected your industry?
Like most in our industry, we?ve had to adapt to the market.? We have gone from building custom homes to performing renovations, building additions, finishing basements, remodeling homes and small commercial jobs.

Is there anything unique or memorable about Dr. Beachy?s property? For example, something that made it different from other properties?
Each project presents new and exciting challenges, some bad and some good!? The Beachy?s is a smaller scale commercial project that is much like building a Ranch home.

CPRIT grant helps Rice, BCM crack problem of predicting gene targets for PcG proteins
HOUSTON -- Cancer is usually attributed to faulty genes, but growing evidence from the field of cancer epigenetics indicates a key role for the gene "silencing" proteins that stably turn genes off inside the cell nucleus. A new study from Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) promises to speed research in the field by rapidly identifying the genes that epigenetic proteins can target for silencing.
The study, which appears this week in Nucleic Acids Research, shows how a new computer program called EpiPredictor can search any genome to identify specific genes affected by epigenetic proteins. The research includes detailed experimental findings that verify EpiPredictor's results. The research was funded in part by the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).
"Cancer epigenetics is a new field, and we are still struggling with the basics," said lead investigator Jianpeng Ma, professor of bioengineering at Rice and the Lodwick T. Bolin Professor of Biochemistry at BCM. "It's something like a board game. Until now, we've understood some of the rules and seen a few of the pieces, but the game board itself has been mostly blank. EpiPredictor lets everyone see the board. It really changes things."
While many cancers have been linked to mutations in the DNA sequence of particular genes, epigenetic changes do not involve genetic mutations. Instead, epigenetics allows two cells with identical DNA sequences to behave in wholly different ways. Epigenetic proteins effectively edit the genome by turning off genes that are not needed. This editing process is what allows human beings to have specialized cells -- like nerve cells, bone cells and blood cells -- that look and behave differently, even though they share the same DNA.
The key epigenetic players in cancer are a family of proteins called polycomb-group (PcG) proteins. PcGs are found deep inside the nucleus of cells, in the chamber where DNA is stored. Studies have found abnormally high levels of PcGs in some of the most aggressive forms of breast and prostate cancer.
PcGs are generalists that can be called upon to silence any one of several hundred to several thousand genes. They are recruited to this task by polycomb response elements (PREs), segments of DNA that are located next to the genes the proteins subsequently silence. This is where the playing board goes blank; though scientists know there are literally hundreds to thousands of potential PREs in any given genome -- including everything from simple insects to human beings -- only a few PREs have ever been found.
"So far, only two PREs have been experimentally verified in mammals -- one in mice and one in humans," said EpiPredictor creator Jia Zeng, a BCM postdoctoral research associate. "We suspect there are so many of them, but finding them has been difficult."
Zeng, a computer scientist, had no formal biology training when she joined Ma's laboratory under a CPRIT-funded training program for computational cancer research.
"One of the biggest challenges since the completion of the Human Genome Project has been how to dig useful information out of the enormous amount of genomic data," Ma said.
Ma said Zeng's new method for zeroing in on PRE sequences is broadly applicable for genomic data mining in areas beyond cancer research.
"Determining the function of a gene based solely on sequence data is virtually impossible," Ma said. "Recognizing this, Jia applied some advanced tools from computer science to create a learning program that could be trained to look for PRE sequences based upon the scant experimental data that were available."
In tests on the genome of the fruit fly Drosphilia melanogaster, the EpiPredictor program found almost 300 epigenetic target genes. Experimental research by Ma's longtime collaborator, BCM biochemist Qinghua Wang, verified that the EpiPredictor predictions were biologically significant.
"We are now working on using the method to scan the human genome to search for potential genes that play a role in cancer epigenetics," said Wang, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology. "We also hope that others will explore how this new method may help to identify the location and function of genes beyond the realm of epigenetics."
