The state Legislature on Wednesday, after Tuesday?s deadline for committee work, began passing bills in the full House and Senate. Among them:
n Hunting/fishing camps and flood insurance: The Senate on Wednesday overwhelmingly passed SB 2634, an attempt to fix a law that could get the state kicked out of the National Flood Insurance Program and put 88,000 homeowners and mortgages at risk.
The House last week passed HB773, a similar measure.
Attorney General Jim Hood had issued an opinion that state law exempts hunting and fishing camps from meeting local building codes and flood regulations. In 2011, FEMA warned unless this changes by May 5, Mississippi could lose its NFIP certification.
Sen. Will Longwitz, R-Madison, led the bill?s passage Wednesday. He said FEMA has sent word the changes would suffice to keep the state in the program.
The bill passed Wednesday with little debate. Sen. Joey Fillingane, R-Sumrall, cast the lone vote against the measure.
?We have no choice but to pass this measure, this session,? said Sen. Dean Kirby, R-Pearl.
n Shrimping/oystering bills: The Senate on Wednesday unanimously passed bills sponsored by Sen. Brice Wiggins, R-Pascagoula, to help struggling shrimpers and oystermen on the Coast.
SB 2295 would allow the Commission on Marine Resources, in the event of a natural or man-made disaster, to open an emergency shrimp season even if testing shows shrimp haven?t reached the normally required 68-a-pound count.
SB 2300 would allow CMR to reopen an oyster bed in the Bay of St. Louis to oystering.
As is tradition in the Senate, freshman Wiggins was subjected to a little good-natured ribbing and mock questioning by his fellow lawmakers as he handled some of his first legislation before the full Senate.
?Would this affect shrimping in the Ross Barnett Reservoir?? said Sen. Gary Jackson, R-French Camp.
