Welcome to the BUSINESS DISTRICT
Workplace Communication
I have the privilege of teaching at class at Baker College called Workplace Communication. Since everyone at college has the goal of working, it is important for them to know some concepts of effective communication. ?Over my decades in business and industry, I have developed some thoughts of my own on workplace communication.
I have focused the class on communicating effectively at different levels during the same communication. We consider written communication, verbal communication, and values communication. To become as valuable as possible in your job, you need to study all three areas.
Writing is practiced the most during the class. For many people, writing is hard, frustrating work. For all of us, good writing is work. Public speaking is another whole class, but it is addressed in this class, too. As they practice writing and speaking, we work at intentionally communicating values. We decide what we want our audience to know and to know about us.
The focus of communication is productivity and professionalism. If our communications don?t somehow contribute to the overall goals of the organization, we are wasting the company?s money spent on us. If we do not communicate our professionalism, we are minimizing the readers? expectations that we can competently assist them.
College may be in the past for some of us. Learning cannot ever be in past for any of us.
Thank you for reading this note.
