(Craighead County, AR) An illegal cockfighting ring has landed 7 people in jail, one of whom is wanted for murder in Alabama.
A tip about a fight over the weekend led authorities to a house near the Missouri state line in Craighead County.
Cash and plenty of evidence showed this was no ?small-time? operation.
Deputies found 18 surviving birds during the Saturday raid and five dead ones.
Garland Tipton, East Craighead County Deputy Sheriff, says the cockfights were outside a house on County Road 534, ?They had some more chicken houses around here in a circle and trying to hide where they been fighting. But they was all circled around here.?
Tipton told us, ?According to the people, the ones we arrested, they done most of their fighting in Mississippi.?
A large amount of cash was recovered along with a collection of razor blades called ?gaffs.?
When the ?gaffs? are attached to a rooster?s leg during a fight, they are deadly.
Deputies also recovered bottles of Vitamin-K, used for blood clotting, and a Strychnine solution used to hype up the roosters.
Margaret Shephard, Director of the Northeast Arkansas Humane Society,
was at the house Tuesday to remove two cats and a female pit bull.
She says it appears the cats and dog have been well cared for, unlike the roosters which showed a variety of battle scars, ?Severe cuts to the neck, the wings, the breastbone area. It?s quite a gruesome blood sport. And its disturbs me, the people who would find enjoyment with this.?
The roosters are still at the house and are being treated by the Humane Society.
They?re waiting to hear from their national organization about what to do with them since the birds were drugged.?
